“Currently the exterior of the mansion looks like a construction zone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

The tour is interesting but don't be surprised if the exterior is under construction as it has been for the last 3 years.
The rangers are interesting to talk with and do their best to paint an accurate picture of the family and the content of their contemporary lifestyle for the period.

“Well worth the price and the time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

This tour, and home, are owned by the National Park Service. There IS a fee for the tour, though you can tour the grounds without paying. It is a five dollar fee, cheap for what turned out to be an hour and a half VERY informative guided tour. A very interesting look into several families's impact on the home.

“A must for Serious Plantation Visitors”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

Of the many times we have visited Natchez, we had never visited Melrose. It is a treasure and one not to be missed. The National Park Service has done a wonderful job of bringing this fine building and its out buildings to life. There is great information provided, far more than in any of the other tours. The volunteers and staff are very knowledgable, especially Barney? who was a walking encyclopedia of information. The Plantation is also unique in that it has most of its original furnishings or period antiques. Some of the original flooring is also available for viewing. The slave quarters out back give a lot of important information about life for those that did allof the work.

The most remarkable thing of all is that there was no entrance fee. It apparently has been a well-kept secret. I strongly recommend a visit.

“Owned by the Park Service, and well run”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Mostly original furniture and furnishings. Outbuildings help tell the story of life pre-civil war and its aftermath. Park Service does its usual good job of explaining and maintaining. Natchez, pre-civil war was small and everyone who was rich seemed to be related to each other, and the same with this house, as the owner was related to the owner of Monmouth, just down the street. Go!
