“Not suitable for young kids”
Reviewed June 8, 2012

This place is not well advertised and coulodn't be located on our GPS! The drive up was stunning but on arrival...very disappointing. I assumed it would be a hairpin bend drive up to a park which had wide open spaces and places for kids to run around. What we found was a continuation of these hairpin bends and a few cages located on the sides of the road with some unhappy looking animals in them. The steep hilly road which was the only way to see the animals was completely unsuitable for a 1, 3 and 5 year old. As a result, we drove up to the restaurant which was shut, kids had a pee outside as we couldn't find a toilet, eventually restaurant opened and had a really stodgy pizza straight out of a box. Swimming pool was shut so couldn't even cool off after walking a little. Give this place a miss!

“Stunning setting but flawed delivery”
Reviewed August 27, 2011

Funded by Euro money and it shows - no one at the entrance so that was free. Very steep concrete road winds past reasonable enclosures of all sorts of animals, including a stunning White tiger. The 'restaurant' was an overstaffed cafe and they had to stop watching telly to serve us - but then the menu del dia was a stunning gazpacho, with the right accompaniments, and pork fillets in a pepper sauce - both dishes fresh, simple and served with a flourish. Quite a surprise.

The pool is awesome and yet again nominally 3 euros but no one bothered to ask. No wonder Spain is broke.

Just a day visit so can't comment on accommodation but well worth a visit. Would echo the point that you have to drive then get out to look at the animals.

The listing says Sierra Nevada but this is really a La Herrida or Almuneca attraction, and incredibly is not promoted at all - I was searching for 'White tiger' and 'outdoor zoo' and coming up blank until someone told me the name.

Tricksy drive from the N7 motorway, snails pace needed on hair-raising bends but again a wonderful experience in itself.

Fairly quiet when we went (Saturday).

Well worth a visit, if only to marvel at the views, the tigers, and the uses of the European Social Fund.

“Pena Escrita - Zoo and Swimming Pool in the Sierra Nevada”
Reviewed September 25, 2010

On our visit a couple of years ago, the road up there was not paved and the ride was pretty scary, but now the roads are paved and much better. Pena Escrita has in the meantime developed to a zoo, with all kinds of animals ( Wallabies, Hippopotamus, Monkeys etc.) with a nice pool and a little restaurant. The view from the Pool is breathtaking. Nowadays, you have to pay € 5,-- entry fee per car and € 2 Euro per Person if you want to use the pool. I think these prices are very low considering the nice location. Definately a nice destination for a daytrip!

“don't stay overnight”
Reviewed June 30, 2010

was under the impression that the place had a restaurant not just a few picnic tables and a bar, staff very unfriendly when we interrupted their card game for overpriced food and drink. The manager of the "restaurant" seemed very eager to show his authority by shouting at his staff in front of us. was very uncomfortable. We paid 6o euros for a cortijo for 1 night which was dirty, had no water pressure in case you were wanting a shower which smelled of drains and was wanting to try and dry yourself on damp towels. Don't dare move in the bed as you are likely to break them by the sounds of it! The cafeteria which is also advertised was closed and the "restaurant" closed at 8pm, so from then on, there were no members of staff around the park in case you needed anything. There was also no sign at all that you HAD to drive around the park itself as nobody but an althlete could take on the all of the hills. The roads and paths are not suitable at all for anyone with children or disabled which was also not made aware. Apart from the animals, the trip was very disappointing and we would not return there.

“Great Day trip in outside of La Heradurra”
Reviewed September 4, 2008

Pena Escrita is an animal park located in one of the largest natural parks in Spain. It's not only a bit bizarre, but its truly breathtaking. Fun for any age I think- but especially if you have kids. (this is a day-trip/overnight).

GETTING THERE:
The hairpin turns and steep drop off may keep some motorists from making the 45 minute journey from the coast, but I'm urging you to put that aside. (Or if you are a daredevil, you'll love the scenery as you climb further and further up)! It's located in the hills behind La Heradurra.

WHAT'S UP (literally)
At the of a mountain sits this park, complete with zebras, hippopatamus, and bears. Your first thought will surely be, 'how did they even get the animals UP HERE?" The park is free and you can drive from outpost to outpost and look at all the animals grazing with a breathtaking view of the entire coastline and mountains.

Other bits-
Bring your suit. It's one euro to swim in the olympic sized pool and after an afternoon under the hot spanish sun traipsing around, you will want to cool off. The pool itself is outdoors and so you are still looking at the Sierra Nevada mountains while you take a dip.

CABINS
We've stayed at the cabins and I would highly recommend it. It's a great cheap adventure and even though I would primarily call this a 'family destination' I went there with my fiance and we had a great time (cards and some wine being essential items :))
(one negative- beds were uncomfortable)

RESTAURANT
There is one restaurant, which is outdoors and basically a shed with a bunch of picnic tables. Don't be dismayed- the food is actually really quite good, all fresh, local produce. (try the lamb)

I don't post much, but this is one well-kept secret I'm happy to share and actually felt obliged to on account of how delightful it is. :)

Buena suerte!
