Holiday Inn Express Mill Valley San Francisco Area
Ranked #2 of 5 Hotels in Mill Valley
Reviewed April 30, 2008

I spent a week in San Francisco and just to avoid a rip-off by downtown hotels (charging for parking $35-50/day, internet...) I selected this hotel. Actually it is an motel located conveniently near highway with all amenities one can expect in a Holiday Inn Express: clean and spacious room (apparently refurbished a year ago); complimentary parking, internet, and breakfast (standard Express one). The only problem I encountered was rather noisy air condition in the room (I used it for heating since outside temperature was in 50sF)--so I used it in the evening and morning only.

The website of the hotel (http://www.millvalleyca.hiexpress.com) makes a bit false impression of luxury to be expected: expect an Express as usual.

I love the convenient location of the hotel! It has such wonderful views of Marin specially Mt. Tamalpais- the price range is one of the best value to get offering breakfast buffet. The hotel just recently renovated beginning of 2008 and it is was a wonderful stay- I recommend this for all travelers.

This was a fairly average hotel and comfortable enough, but I can't believe the prices they charge. Everywhere seems to be expensive in Marin County and my advice would be to stay in San Francisco as you have more options available and it is very near.

The positives: The beds were comfortable, the breakfast was fine and it is located next to an above average Italian restaurant which meant we didn't have to drive around looking for somewhere to eat that night.

The negatives (apart from the price): there was not enough hot water to have a bath and the shower was either a mere dribble or too cold. the breakfast room was crowded.

One last thing: if you have a lot of luggage, stay on the ground floor as there is no elevator.

This hotel is very run-down and the facilities are in much need of renovation. While I found the room fairly clean, the hallway smelled of smoke that carried into the room at times. My opinion of Holiday Inn Express is one of "newer and more up-to-date" but in this case it is the HIE name on an old motel.

I did find the staff very friendly and the breakfast to be of normal HIE quality. The location is great, just across the Golden Gate and close to Muir Woods, Point Reyes, and on the way to wine country.

For what we paid ($130) I had a bit higher expectations. But the going rate in San Francisco for lodging is higher overall so I guess I can't be overly critical.

Nice location next to 101 and Hwy 1 for a couple of tourists such as ourselves headed back from wine country. We just drove up and were able to get a room. The pool looked nice, we never used it but were surprised at it's upkeep. Sometimes hotel pools area disgusting but this one actually looked inviting. The breakfast was standard continental fare.

We never found an elevator on the property which made lugging our HUGE brand new luggage up and down the stairs interesting. Guess that's our fault in a way and maybe it's an older hotel but it would've made it more convenient to have an elevator.

The italian joint next door was nice, but expensive. Not to many options for food within walking distance so we settled for it. At least there was something close by.

All in all, a comfortable, quiet, well located hotel.

Although this hotel is run-down, it is conveniently located in an area where there are not a lot of options. I've stayed here perhaps 10 times over the years, and everyone is friendly and helpful, so I've never had a problem along those lines. But, like I say, it is somewhat run-down (as opposed to dirty as some have said) but I disagree with those who have said that the management keeps on top of it. I think they try, but are not really successful.

I also experienced the heaps of garbage by one of the guest entrances, which is inexcusable. I also had a problem in getting a hot enough shower.

Next time I'm going to try the Best Western at the next exit north off 101 and will report on whether I think it's any better.

I was a little nervous given some of the bad reviews but stayed here for business for 3 nights at the end of May. The location was great, right off of the 101. Had a view of Mt. Tamalpais and the water. Could open my balcony door and enjoy the breeze.

The room was comfortable - nice bed, linen, work desk. Wireless internet was great and complimentary. Bathroom was small with a light/fan combination or a light on a timer - both poor choices in attempts to be environmentally friendly.

Contiental breakfast was standard HI fare. No hotel restaurant but Fratonoio's (Italian) next door was fantastic.
