Owner description: Muir Woods has a rich and varied history, from its use by the Coast Miwok people, to its early days of tourism and the Mount Tamalpais Mill Valley Scenic Railway, to an era of conservation, to modern preservation. In each era, the forest has been affected by the actions of humans, for better or for worse. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, this coastal redwood preserve features majestic redwoods and scenic hiking trails that draw more than 1.5 million visitors each year.

You must go early to get a parking space as it can get crazy. This spot combined with a drive in the Marin Headlands are both awe inspiring DO NOT DARE MISS when you are in San Francisco. This is really the heart of what gives the Bay Area such a great energy as it puts the beauty of the area on full display. I recommend hiking shoes although most of the paths are just fine for sneakers. For a full intake of the space, I recommend 2-4 hours to do it in a non-rushed pace.

If you get off the major trail, you'll lose most of the people and be entranced by the beautiful forest. The redwoods are awesome. Good trails, but be forewarned they do include a lot of steps.

Just a 20-minute drive north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods is a surprising oasis providing a welcome break from the noise and bustle of San Francisco. I had heard it can get crowded and that the parking/shuttle is a hassle. However, we avoided those problems by going late in the afternoon on a Tuesday. We pulled into the parking lot around 5pm, found plenty of parking right at the visitor center, and stayed for 90 minutes, which was ample time for us to leisurely stroll an easy 1/2 mile walk through the woods. Once leaving the freeway, the winding mountain drive to the Visitors' Center was beautiful.
The size and beauty of the trees are incredible, but if you've been to Sequoia National Park, you may find Muir Woods disappointing in comparison. If you want more strenuous hiking, you'll need to allow more time. If you are passing through Marin County, it is worth the slight detour, and if you are staying in San Francisco, it is worth a trip for a few hours. We followed up our visit with dinner in Sausalito, which provided amazing views of the bay and the San Francisco skyline.

The visitor center is always but we hiked down from the top of the trail and had a car down at the visitor center. Great trees and great hike.

This was a beautiful trip. Adult admission is $7 each, and well worth it for the hikes along the way. My husband and I spent about 3 hours on the trails but the park allows you to be on them for as much or as little time as you like. The main trail, which is a loop, is planked and wheelchair/stroller accessible.

This review can't do the park justice; go see it for yourself. Advice: go early! My husband and I got there about 9:30a.m. and the lots were filling up quickly! By the time we left, there was a line of 6 cars waiting for our parking space.
