Description: The Captain's Wife in Penarth is a country pub & restaurant oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

I have been to the captains wife on several occassions. Its in a lovely location but on a sunny day you can't get served at the bar and food takes forever to arrive. The food is fairly expensive for pub grub and portion sizes are small. However, if you go in the winter its easier to get a drink at the bar

We were a party of five who arrived at 7pm on Saturday, 3rd August 2013. Waited one hour for our food to arrive. Different staff gave different explanations! Reading other reviews this is clearly a common occurence. The quality of the food is irrelevant as the experience of dining out is wrecked by lack of customer service. Avoid unless you are prepared to wait a long time for your food to arrive.

We were reluctant to visit having read others' reviews of this pub, but decided to arrive early and give it a go. Food was above average and the wait for it was 20 minutes. Plenty of staff serving, friendly and attentive. The tables filled up quickly so it continues to be very popular place. Be very careful walking out to Sully Island as the tide turns quickly, within seconds blocking access back to the shore.

although not living that far from this place have been every weekend since February, just popped in for a drink first visit, and commented on what other people ordered as they walked past saying we will eat here next time, very lovely building and is reported to be haunted, at least the old part is to be. Located with a sea view its enjoyable to sit on the wall and watch the boats ,if the tide is out you can walk across to the island but make sure you get back in time as the tide comes in very quick. On our second visit we had a three course meal, had to wait about fifteen minuites, but after all everything is cooked fresh and if your going out for a family meal what's the rush, with friendly staff lovely food and good selections of alcoholic and soft drinks we were in no hurry to leave, it gets busy during the summer and holiday breaks as its located by a caravan park and you get a lot of holiday makers coming for food. A large variety of home cooked foods and fish is a must to try with chunky chips. Excellent prices for good quality food. Booking is advised.

Saw the sign for the Captains Wife when driving through Sully on a Monday lunchtime. We didn't order anything too exotic, burger and chicken, but both were excellent and the service very polite. Pub is set in a nice location, with easy parking. It was fairly quiet being a Monday, so I can't comment on problems encountered by other reviewers during busy times, but would definitely return.
