“Lovely atmosphere, pretty decent food”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

My wife and I had a nice breakfast here. We came to try it out after noticing one day, just for how nice the space was, all very nicely decorated.
We both had their full english breakfast (call the Full Welsh) - though I had the vegetarian version - made for a very decent meal - portions were possibly a little too much for mid morning too be honest.
Service was fine and friendly, not much staff around, but I guess that was because we went at such a quiet time in the morning.

“Did not like the customer service.”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

We went to Blue Pelican with family members to celebrate my birthday. My sister in law said that this place has got excellent reviews and suggested to have a breakfast there. We arrived at the place just before 11am. I liked the way in as you walk in to lovely gift shop. Then we were very pleased to discover the lift at the end of the shop as we had elderly lady with us. Upstairs was another gift shop and many beautiful things to choose from, perfect place for a birthday!

The place was busy and we had to wait for the bigger table for a few minutes which was not a problem at all. The gentleman who was helping with the table was not in very good mood, we thought at our first impression. We were seated at lovely table and given breakfast menu. The place looked great, spacious and light. We liked the menu and got excited about our orders as we were starving (it was a quite long journey for us to get to Penarth). When the waiter was ready to take our orders he informed us that actually the breakfast was not served any longer and he gave us a different menu. We politely asked if there was any exception as we are really excited about the breakfast and we have just wasted time looking at the menu that was wrongly given to us at the first place. Then he pulled his face and said something along the line: 'Fine, let me see what we can do'. Then he came back and said 'Sorry, no more breakfast, you have to order from the lunch menu'. None of us (6 people) liked his attitude. We felt that we are trouble for him and we really wasting his time. We would not mind staying and go thru the new menu but his face expression and body language made our decision very easy, we decided to leave and find a new place. There was no engagement from his side, he was not bother to help us, his politeness was artificial and forced.

Shame as the place looked lovely and the section with cakes very promising. It was my birthday morning and did not start very good however we founded lovely place by the sea and continued the celebrations.

Thank you for telling us about your recent visit and for your very kind comments about the Hamptons store and the choices on our menu. We were naturally concerned however to learn that you were disappointed with our service.

Our breakfast is served until 11.30am from Monday to Saturday and until 11am on Sundays. I understand that you visited on a week day and arrived after 11.30 by which time breakfast had finished. Unfortunately you were given the wrong menus, this was entirely our fault and I can only apologise that it happened. The person who gave you the menus had only just joined us – I offer this by way of explanation rather than as an excuse. I understand that the person who came to take your order apologised and explained what had happened. He also offered to see if it was still possible for the kitchen to prepare breakfast for you even though they were already into lunch. Unfortunately it was not possible due to the volume of lunch orders waiting to be prepared. Again he apologised that you had mistakenly been given the breakfast menus instead of the lunch menus.

We are very fortunate to have an excellent team of staff, all of whom endeavour to ensure that each of our guests enjoys the best possible service we can provide. None of them would ever knowingly behave in a manner that would cause a guest to be unhappy or upset.

I can only apologise again that you were not given the correct menus for the time that you arrived and for any dissatisfaction you feel in the way we looked after you.
Best wishes, Peter

“Shortbread haven”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Have visited the Blue Pelican on several occasions and it has always been consistently excellent in terms of food, value for money and cleanliness. The staff are always polite and welcoming and the array and choice of products on the menu is interesting and fresh.
My partner had an Italian type platter with had at least 7 different variety's of food upon it, he said it was delicious.I went with my favorite home made carrot and coriander soup and it did not disappoint.
The home made cakes and deserts are a treat, we even bough some shortbread to take home as it was calling us from the display.
My partner also said it was the best pot of tea he had ever had when out to eat, high praise indeed.
So if your looking for good home cooked fare in a relaxed atmosphere you cannot go wrong.

“I expected more..”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

After reading some great reviews we decided to give this place a try. It was pretty busy and we were packed into a table very close to another, but felt that we were lucky to have got in as it is such a good place! We ordered a sandwich, a salad and hot drinks. My ciabatta with prosciutto, salami, etc was alright, but the bread was a bit dry. The chicken in my partner's salad was overcooked, so also a bit dry. My coffee was very nice but my partner's hot chocolate was not hot! Maybe they were just having an off day, or maybe our expectations were too high, we thought it was ok, but not exciting.

Thank you for your comments on this site. However we're so sorry to learn that your recent visit didn’t live up to expectations.
We take great pride in the quality of the food and beverages that we prepare and serve and it’s a huge disappointment to us when something is not right or a customer is unhappy.
Our bread is baked freshly each day by our local baker here in Penarth. The ciabatta you were served would have been toasted and maybe it had been left in the grill for too long. It would have been absolutely no trouble to prepare something else for you and to have re-made the hot chocolate if only you had let us know at the time.
Sadly we can’t put it right now but hopefully you will give us another chance and visit us again next time you are in Penarth.
With best wishes,
Peter

“Always great - and dog friendly!”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

We visit the Blue Pelican Cafe at Hamptons at least a couple of times a month. It's always friendly with a great atmosphere, the food is always really good, and best of all it's properly dog friendly with dedicated tables for 'doggy diners'. It's so refreshing to be able to take our dog into a cafe and feel genuinely welcome. Highly recommended.
