“Excellent location, but overpriced.”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

The Roosevelt Inn is located on the main highway through Keystone; excellent location near Mt. Rushmore and all the other touristy venues. Exceptionally clean and very pleasant staff. BUT, after having called many of the local hotels, including major chains, we could have booked else where easily for $25 to $30 dollars less per night/per room. While we didn't request adjoining rooms would have thought our two rooms would have been on the same floor. Pool, ice, etc on second floor. We took third floor thinking we would have view of hillside in back. Instead we looked out on parking lot where cars were parked, literally, four feet from our window....no privacy so kept curtains closed. Pool was fine for the grandkids, but hot tub off in dark corner and water was cloudy green. Didn't venture in. Breakfast was OK; two waffle irons and boxed donuts (Hostess mini chocolate covered), breads and cereal. We too, ran out of milk, but was quickly refilled. Limited seating. I would suggest they skip the breakfast altogether and lower their prices a bit. If money isn't an issue, this is a very clean, quiet, and friendly hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for room on second floor, facing front of hotel.

Thank you for a fair and honest review of our property. However I would like to address a common perception about prices.

Unfortunately, in Keystone, at least three other properties have electronic reader boards showing prices often as low as $49.95 per night, but these rooms are almost never "available" and the actual prices charged by these properties are in the same general range as other properties in Keystone. Although some might consider the tactic to be false advertising, there is no law in South Dakota preventing motels from doing this. (The tactic is also used in Rapid City.)

We at the Roosevelt Inn want our guests to be aware of the real prices charged by other properties, so we actually put links to their booking sites on our website at http://www.rosyinn.com. We invite potential guests to compare rates and amenities before booking. Also, reviews here in Trip Advisor often comment on properties that falsely advertise low prices that are "not available".

Finally, price is not the only measure of value. As this reviewer correctly points out, some properties offer lower prices but fewer amenities, such as no continental breakfast or smaller rooms.

Parking here is very tricky. Get back to the hotel early or there will be slim to no parking on the property and you'll have to park across a street in a gravel lot. We checked in and no one was at the front desk. Finally a maintenance guy showed up and checked us in. This was slightly unprofessional. The hallways were SO HOT like there was no a/c in the public areas. The room was ok. Bathroom and sink area were painfully small. The bed was comfortable and we did sleep well. A/C in room worked just fine. The whole place is in need of big renovations but even updating paint would make a difference. We stayed on the second floor - no view of Mt. Rushmore from our balcony but it was still a nice view. No giant complaints but I couldn't recommend the place either. I think we'd try someplace else if we were ever in the area.

Hotel was what I expected, for a very reasonable price during a very busy weekend! It is not a chain, so those who expect that may be disappointed. Breakfast was not advertised, but a simple breakfast was included (but would have like some juice). Location was excellent for all of our travels in this part of South Dakota. My son enjoyed the pool table and foos ball table, too.

Skanky, unhealthy room with oblivious staff. The econommy room has a horrid smell, holes in the blanket, & water stain with what might be black mold. Stay away! I wish we had.

We regret that this guest had an unsatisfactory stay at the Roosevelt Inn, however we would have appreciated having been given an opportunity to correct the problem while the guest was here. As the guest reports there was indeed a water stain on the ceiling of the room in which the guest stayed, which was due to a leak in the water supply line to a sink in the room above. The problem was corrected as soon as we became aware of it and the ceiling was repainted as soon as it dried out.

Unfortunately there is no record of any complaint from this guest (or any guest in that room for that matter.) We believe that the the problem only existed for a few days and the repair was completed before this review appeared. If the guest had notified us of the problem at the time of check-in we could have moved the guest to another room or made some other arrangements to the guests satisfaction.

Finally, I would point out that all properties can from time to time have unwanted odors in rooms. These are almost always the result of activities by previous guests, such as tobacco use, pets, diapers, cooking, and various other odor-causing activities. Although some odors can indeed be the result of mold or mildew, such odors are distinctive and were definitely not the case here. Again, had we known of this problem we could have taken care of it immediately and would have happily moved the guest to another room or canceled any reservation and issued full refund.

The manager was very nice and polite. Rooms was good - clean, mattress was comfortable, bathroom was clean too. Some problem with the plumbing - could hear the flush drainage if somebody used it on the floor above us. Breakfast was great.

Stayed 2 nights at the Roosevelt during an 18 trip of SD, WY and CO.First impressions are that its a bit dated and some of the public areas and stairways have seen better days, but the rooms were clean and comfortable, with a good indoor sitting area as well as the balcony area. There was a huge selection of freeby stuff for the bathroom, which was perhaps a little small. The breakfast was fine - good choice of cereals, pastries, breads etc and teas/coffees/juices. The seating area at breakfast was a bit small though and we were forced outside - though as it's a bit off the main road this was fine. Keystone is a great little town with lots of stores obviously catering for the tourists and plenty of places of eat. Would recommend.
