“Good option for Mount Rushmore”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

Just off the Junction with Route 16 and about a mile and a half outside of Keystone this is a nice hotel if you are visiting Mount Rushmore. Staff were attentive and friendly and rooms were good. We didn't eat breakfast (we went both morning to Teddy's Deli in Keystone) but would good back. Two big beds in the room and a walk to the Holy Smoke BBQ where we had dinner one night.

Typically good standard. of room, but stay made memorable by the helpful, genuinely friendly service provided by the young lady and young man at the reception desk, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Despite only staying one night, I needed a lot of assistance as my luggage was lost in transit!

Room Tip: Take the time to speak to people on the front desk as people and not 'hotel staff'.

Would stay again if I have pleasure of being in the area again! The lobby/sitting area is spacious with a good amount if comfortable seating! Manager is delightful to talk w/, very knowledgable about the area. Hotel is just miles from Mount Rushmore! Close to Custer State park towns of Keystone & Hill City.

Breakfast is plentiful w/sweet treats and healthy choices.

The facility is deservedly a Best Western Plus. It has wonderful, spacious rooms, unique decor and great facilities. The styling of the building and lobby are very striking and complement its rustic, southwestern style throughout. Best of all, however the staff is very friendly, helpful, accommodating and helpful in every way with service, information as well as going out of their way to help out a fellow traveler.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms give you a beautiful view of the Black Hills

The room was much bigger than I anticipated. Having a family of 5, a room can get tight but this room let us spread out. My kids loved the indoor pool (it was on the second floor). The location is very close to Mount Rushmore and several restaurants. The breakfast was adequate and very busy. (we were there on weekend) The hotel was clean and was spacious (lobby, dining area, etc) Very pleasantly surprised and happy with the choice. The price was wonderful and very affordable. The only complaint that I can think of is that the elevator is very slow.

We stayed at this hotel from June 28th, 2013 to July 1st, 2013. This is our second time to stay here since 2002. While the hotel appears to be new, as I mentioned before, we stayed in this same hotel 11 years ago. Now for my review - I'd like to mention the positives first. The hotel has been remodeled and has a new appearance. The rooms, (except for the cigarette smell), were very clean and the beds were very comfortable. The maid staff were very friendly, professional, and hard workers. The overall feeling is that this is an upscale, high quality, clean hotel. The manager was professional in speaking, very knowledgeable and helpful.

Now for the Negatives: The towels were dingy white to gray to brown and worn. The TV was old and non-flat screen. In addition we could not find a TV channel card and it only received about 6 or 7 channels. Since we didn't come to Keystone to watch TV, it wasn't a problem. Our room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. The Manager tried to tell us that the cigarette smoke in our room was from the people sitting outside smoking and it just got into the ac system. The manager then cleaned out the filter, and said it would go away. First of all, we were on the 3rd floor, room 315 to be exact, so the smoke didn't come from the people sitting outside. Second of all, this room apparently was a smoking room at one time because the smell is in the curtains, walls and furniture. After the manager cleaned the ac filter and sprayed some spray, the smell went away for a short time, but later returned. He also told me that none of his employee's smoke and that they would have informed him if a room had been smoked in. It should be noted that on the following day, we did observed one of the maids smoking on the patio out back. We would open the window and leave it open all day while we were gone, only to return to a smoke smelling room. The manager was wearing blue jeans and a best western shirt that was not pressed so I have to mark him down for appearance. The pool was a little cloudy, and dirty looking, almost a light green to yellow color. It seemed like the pool chemicals were out of balance. As a pool owner, I didn't feel comfortable swimming in this pool. The hot-tub was broken as well. When I spoke to the manager about these issues, he told me that someone had messed with his skimmers but he got them fixed and the water should clear up. Note: The skimmer only removes debris from the surface but has little to do with the water quality. The filter system and chemical maintenance control water quality. I checked every day and it never got any better. I also mentioned to the manager that the hot tub was broken and he said that a part was being shipped in from Nebraska and would arrive in a few days. The hot tub remained non-functional the entire time we stayed there and according to previous reviews, has been broken for a long time. The breakfast service during the week was horrible. The lady working the kitchen couldn't keep up. The kept running out of eggs, sausage, bread, rolls, milk, and other supplies. The manager wife ran the kitchen on the weekends and she did an exceptional job, but the lady working M-F did a terrible job. On our last day there, the sausage tasted and looked like left overs. One piece of sausage tasted spoiled and had to be spit out. It appeared as though they would serve the left overs from the day before in order to save money. The health inspector dropped in for a visit while we were there. I watched the kitchen lady, (not the managers wife), take out the trash and then grab her cleaning rag and proceed to clean and handle food all without washing her hands. The health inspector also saw the same thing and brought it to her attention. The health inspector found a list full of violations while we were sitting there eating. I talked to him briefly about my concerns and he said that he noticed that and quite a few other violations that they would have to correct. Disgusted, we lost our appetites and left. All in all, if you don't go there to swim, watch TV, use the hot-tub, use the Wi-Fi, or expect great breakfast service Monday through Friday, then I would recommend it. Because the rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable, we may stay there again but with lower expectations. The manager was nice but had a textbook answer for everything. It was like he was a professional excuse maker, just tell us what he needs to tell us so that we go away. Nothing he could about this stuff but he did adjust our bill for our troubles.

Greetings, Thanks for the review. Your positive comments certainly are appreciated. The staff works very hard making sure our guests have wonderful stays. And....we have fabulous guests!!!

While you touched on several issues, I will directly address the experience you had in
breakfast room. We have no outstanding health violations and are inspected regularly by the the State of SD. On the day you mentioned, the hotel was cited for an incorrectly stored can of cooking spray and a microwave. Both of these have been corrected. Also, all other issues in your lengthy review have been corrected. If you recall, upon check-out you left after a pleasant exchange with the GM.

Traveler's Tip: A couple of times a season we will get guests that simply want a free room, a discounted room, or reward points. They always have the same approach: Say nothing during the stay, and them make a large issue of things upon check-out. Most hotels recognize such ploys and are wise to them. If there are any issues upon check-in please let the staff know asap. Usually this will yield the best result for the guest.

Please see the wonderful reviews of our property, happy travels!

Nice hotel near Mt. Rushmore. Young man at the front desk was bored and seemed inconvenienced by us at check in. However, the rest of the staff was nice. We had 2 queen beds with a fridge and microwave. Beds were comfortable, room clean and pretty roomy. Bathroom was clean. Breakfast was fine...I brought a tray down and brought the food to our room. We would stay here again.
