I had an e-mail confirming our reservation for our 2-night stay only to arrive and find out we were actually booked for July, not June--even though I had a message confirming the actual dates we requested. Also, we were scolded upon arrival because we were too early in the day to check in. Ruined our Keystone vacation. We will not go back.

We stayed at the Holy Smoke with our two teenagers for three nights while touring in the Black Hills and Badlands. We were looking for a place with a little "local feel" to it and one which would give us enough space. In general, we were very pleased. The location was perfect. The room clean and the surroundings beautiful. The only criticism was that one of our kids had to sleep on an "army cot" which was really not that comfortable at all. We expected more space- we were cramped- but since we were out and about all day, it wasn't a real problem. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the cabin and you have four people, it might not work out well.

This place was cool! Husband, 11 yr old daughter and I stayed at Holy Smoke for 2 nights in August in cabin #4 or "Ben Bolt" - it was so much more than we expected!
Check in was very fast at the office/bar/shop area.

The cabin was fantastic- inside kind of an L shape, with one queen bed straight on when you walk in, an 'easy chair' of wicker and cushion to the side, a table and chairs with a goodie baskets near the bed - with tampons, icy hot, advil, toothpaste, mints, gum, taffy and a few other things!, the other queen bed was in the other part of the L shape, with a little night stand and lamp, then there was a TV, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, alarm clock and A/C. The bathroom was large and all wood. Very lovely with kokopelli towel holders. a blow dryer and even liquid soap and dispenser in the shower!

I wished we had booked here longer. we slept well, the room was cleaned while we were out and about the next day with fresh towels and such. What a great place. the cost was exactly as quoted on the website and very reasonable- cheaper than the HI express we'd been at previously! We'll be back again next year!

This "resort" is a clean and relatively comfortable place to stay, however it is not a "resort" more of a campground with cabins and no frills. The cabins were clean. We chose this place based on other reviews and the resort's own website claims but I was disappointed in terms of value for money. We spent two nights, and it was not during high tourist season and was after Sturgis. I was quoted a rate of $120 per cabin per night, but when we got there to check in, the rate was suddenly $145 and if I wanted to cancel I still would have had to pay the first night since we arrived at 4:30PM. This is a decent place to stay but isn't worth more than $50-60 per night in terms of value. I won't stay here again when there are so many other options that would have included a pool, hot tub, or other amenities for a better price.

My family of 4 stayed in cabin 2 for 3 nights. It was a small cabin, with 2 beds (comfortable). It actually had more amenities than I expected, including mini-fridge, microwave, a/c, and hair dryer. The place was clean, and quiet, with daily housekeeping service. Location was nice for Mt. Rushmore, and the really touristy town of Keystone.

I have stayed at the resort on several occassions and have always found the cabin clean, heated or cooled to my liking and the shower pressure was super! The bed was very, no super comfortable! The restruant was colorful and every mea that I had was prepared excellently and special requests were handled - "can you heat up this can of Sweet Peas?" I will stay there any time, except winter...

You have to understand that these are indeed cabins. There are no frills. And if you book a stay at the Holy Smoke, bring your own iron and hair dryer-they are not provided in the cabins.
The floor of our cabin was painted plywood. Again, no frills.
On the positive side, if you are looking for low cost accomodations in the beautiful Black Hills, this is an acceptable alternative, it is just not a hotel room.
