The K Bar S Lodge in Keystone SD was the place to stay in Keystone, especially if you are there to see Mt. Rushmore. The setting was picturesque with a view of Washington and Lincolns profile from the lodge. We saw wild turkeys several times during our stay( we even fed them haha). The rooms were clean, accomodating, and very modern.
Our check-in was very pleasant despite what we had read in previous reviews. The front desk staff remembered my family from when we had called to make a reservation which was so refreshing from bigger hotel chains. The staff was more than friendly, very willing to give ideas for places to visit and restaurants to go to. There is not wireless anywhere in the lodge, but the front desk will give you an ethernet cable to use in your room if you have a laptop. There is also one computer in the upstairs of the lobby for guest use. The waffles at breakfast were delicious!

This is THE BEST HOTEL I've ever stayed at! The rooms were clean, with more than enough pillows! The sheets and matresses were clean and were plentiful! The staff was quick and efficent! But the best part of this hotel was the breakfast! They had everything for breakfast you could imagine! And it all came with the room, so it didn't cost a thing! I could go on for ages about the breakfast but here are just a few items. yougurt, pancakes, waffles, toast, jelly, jam, OJ, Apple juice, skim, 1% ,2% ,and Fat free Milks, bacon eggs, omelets, biscuts and gravy, fruit, coffee 24 hours a day, and alot more. Each room appeared to have a great room, with either a view of Mt. Rushmore, or of Keystone. There were no flaws to this hotel! Each room was private. K BAR S is made up of individual buildings, each with there own deck, patio, private parking area, fire pit and walkways leadiung to the Gazebo, 1880 Train Station nearby, or the Main building and Breakfast building. The rooms had TV, microwave, refrigerator, bathroom and private deck, with a view of Mt. Rushmore! Despite Downtown being commercialized, this Resort-like hotel has remained surrounded by nature, while still remaining just a short walk from downtown. The 1880 train runs right through the hotel and this place has a spectacular view of Mt Rushmore at Night. It's location is amazing too! 2minute drive to Downtown. 2 Minute drive to 1880 Train Station. 5 minutes to Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park. I have no complaints about this hotel! I am most definantley going back.

If you want a view of Mount Rushmore from your balcony, this is the place to go. Set in the woods, yet only a block away from the cute town of Keystone, the location couldn't be more perfect. We wanted to be at Mount Rushmore for the night-time ceremony -- a must see-- and the hotel was only a few miles from there. The room was adequate, the outside balcony was nice to use and the included breakfast was just great. BUT the check-in service couldn't have been worse. This is not your typical hotel/motel type of place. They cater to groups. So when you arrive on your own, getting into your room seems a hit or miss. We waited an hour after their 3:00 p.m. check-in to get into our room, and that was only after we went and talked to the cleaning people ( who were totally overwhelmed) and asked them to clean the room we were assigned. Other rooms were ready. But the reservation staff said they would not switch assigned rooms. We were not alone in the waiting. Three other couples were sitting with their luggage in the lobby. We just looked at each other. This was not Vegas or New York City where you could understand not getting into your rooms on time. The reception desk women just seemed indifferent to it all, even at check-out. There was no "How was your stay?" or anything like that. We would have loved to give this place a higher rating but the front desk staff really turned us off.

Planned a trip to this lodge almost a year in advance. Decided to stay at a lodge vice the "box" hotels in town becasue of the location and amenities the K-Bar-S offered including the view and outdoor gas operated fire pit. Overall nice location but at the end of the day after touring the area, we decided to sit and relax by the fire. First night the fire pit didnt work at all. We asked the night staff to report the problem to report the issue. After checking in the morning (since she had an attitude) no word was passed. We left for the day to tour the area and again once we returned we asked if the word had been passed, No repair order was sent. It was only until the Manager got involved did anything happen. So the second night we went out at sunset, still, no fire pit working. The staffer at the desk came at once to light it and it went out. We went in to ask for a relight and to our surprise, she said she was to busy at the desk to help us out. At $150 a night yuou;d think.......We have decided to leave and check in at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge a day early in hope of getting better service. Its too bad the owner /operator didnt see this since Im sure the staffer would be fired on the spot.....

The breakfast offerings were decent and the staff were great. Too bad they wernt working the desk instead since they are the point people for guests.

We stayed at the K Bar S Lodge right before the July 4th peak period. Our sole purpose for being in South Dakota was to see Mt. Rushmore. We only had two days and one night to visit the area, so we wanted a place that was close to the monument, but not a typical touristy hotel.

Overall, this was a wonderful facility that suited every one of our needs during our one day stay.

Here is what we liked about the lodge:
This place is very clean.
We could see Mt. Rushmore from our balcony.
This is a new facility, built in 2006.
Within walking distance to Keystone, but still far enough away.
Various historical photos located throughout the lodge property
My kids saw wild turkeys on the property.
The staff was helpful whenever we needed them.
Free hot chocolate and tee in the lobby 24 hours a day.
Continental Breakfast buffet.

Here is what we did not like:
The towels, although clean, are not the fluffy, larger sized towels you might find in other hotels. As a result, we needed a few extra towels for the four of us. When we asked for more towels, we had no problems getting them.
The coffee in the lobby was strong enough for my wife’s liking. However, there wasn’t really any place in Keystone we found that had strong enough coffee.

Here are some things to consider if you are booking this hotel in the future:

From what we were told by hotel management, they recently purchased more of the adjacent property, so there is the potential for construction in the future. The potential expansion includes an indoor pool and exercise facility as well as additional rooms.

There is no elevator to get to the second floor; HOWEVER, there is a walk way that allows you to get to the second floor without having to use the steps.

Due to the proximity of Mt. Rushmore, you will hear the helicopter tours starting at about 8:30 AM. There is also a nearby train that runs near the main road next to the property which we heard starting at about 8 AM.

great location, just far enough away from 'downtown keystone' which we found to have bad food and tacky stores. I can see george washington from my deck here. love it. The breakfast is fabulous....especially the waffles. Lovely!

We stayed here our first night out on our way to Montana. Loved the view and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Great location!!! I highly recommend it especially if you are heading west. We got up the next morning and were heading towards the Needles highway by 6:00. Very little traffic.
