“BEST PLACE IN KEYSTONE! FAB. GROUNDS, BREAKFAST, VIEW”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013

My husband and I spent 3 nights here during our 3 week trip to S. Dakota and Wyoming. We wished we'd had another day so we could visit Deadwood and Dances With Wolves filming locations.

We were given a lovely room with a deck and a view of Mount Rushmore. We were told we'd see Mount Rushmore floodlit at night from our deck. This was somewhat exaggerated, as only a profile of 2 of the Presidents was visible at any time of day. However, the location was perfect in all other respects, with massive grounds and wild turkeys, deer and rattlesnakes on site. The 1880 train passes the bottom of the gardens several times a day and stops here once a week. (for certain Groups, not sure whom) There's a kind of BBQ/ornament to sit around at night in the grounds and this is permanently lit during the hours of darkness.

Breakfasts were splendid and taken in the huge conservatory upstairs. There are no facilities for dinner, but it's only 3 minutes by car into Keystone, where Ruby's was a superb place to eat. (Be sure to book) Meals at the Lodge, other than breakfast, are available for only private functions.

There was free wifi and automatic washing machine/tumble-dryer. The staff, especially Jordan Olsen were very helpful. He gave us his personal email address, as replies were non-existent to a couple of the messages I needed to send. (It took 3 months to acquire a room for the whole 3 nights, and he was particularly good in this respect.)

We would definitely recommend this unusual Lodging for anyone visiting the area. Hopefully, there'll be fridges in all the rooms next year. Fetching ice is a slight nuisance, especially at the price.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room with a deck and profile view of Mount Rushmore.

We enjoyed our three day stay at the K Bar S Lodge. The beds were comfortable, the rooms quiet, and scenery outstanding. I was able to easily use the wifi in my room (one of the outlying rooms). We were disappointed we didn't get a room with a view of Mount Rushmore, but honestly we were never there anyway! There were tables and chairs in between the two buildings that had nice views. Deer, wild turkeys, and squirrels roamed the area. Breakfast was a good continental with great toppings for the waffles. We took advantage of the free washer and dryer - exploring is dirtier than we expected! Only negatives: there were a ton of available rooms in the area that appeared to be much cheaper. Also the towels were yellowed and thread bare.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Mount Rushmore, but don't be too disappointed if you don't get...

K Bar S was a mile or so away from the busy downtown Keystone area, which was a plus. There was ample parking for our SUV, trailer, and motorcycles. The grounds were very well kept, and quite scenic. You could see (and hear) the 1880 steam train. The staff were very nice. We asked to be placed in one of the outer buildings rather than in the main building so that we'd have more privacy. This worked well. The rooms were average. A little worn, but certainly acceptable and clean. There is wifi, but only in the common areas between buildings and in the main building. It did not work in the rooms. We had a balcony that you could see George Washington's head in the distance from, which was cool, especially at night, since it was lit up. The breakfast was just OK. There were waffle irons and all the fixings, whole fruit that you could grab a couple of and go, and the usual toast and bagels. On the not so positive side of breakfast, each day they had a "hot" breakfast offering that was not very good. I have been on one of those mail order diets for a while now, and I swear that the "omelette" K Bar S served was EXACTLY the same thing. I'm pretty sure they get them frozen and reheat them, the same way I get my diet food. The other hot offerings were worse. But you can always eat waffles, right? :-) Breakfast could also get quite loud, as there were tour buses leaving from there daily, and everyone ate at the same time, it seemed. Earlier might have been better. One day, we watched a family of wild turkey while we ate breakfast. Over all, I was glad we stayed here, simply because Keystone was much too crowded for comfort.

The K Bar S lodge is nestled in a Black Hills valley away from the touristy town of Keystone. There is a great view of part of the Mount Rushmore Memorial from the lodge and grounds. The faculty is first rate and perfectly blends in with the South Dakota mystique. The staff was extremely courteous and quickly responded to any needs. The lodge has a breakfast bar each morning for the guest which varied somewhat each day in its main dish offering. However, the breakfast offerings were not exceptional but much like a good continental breakfast. There were plenty of grounds to roam and explore and wild turkey and mule deer regularly visited the premises which surrounded by thick forest and granite rock outcrops. We stayed here for one week for a Road Scholar program.

Room Tip: Some rooms faced the mountain without a view. Try to get a room with the view of Rushmore.

Beautiful well kept grounds surround this oasis in Keystone. Accomodations are perfect, the beds, linnens and towels are ok but, could be better. Breakfast is more than enough with a change every day. We visited keystone for five days and have not doubt we stayed at the best place in town! Go for a Mount Rushmore View room....it is worth it!

Room Tip: A second floor room eliminates the possibility of inconsiderate "heavy walkers" above you...

We arrived at the lodge and were immediately awed by several things--the location/scenery at the lodge, the wildlife, the balcony we had with the view of Mt Rushmore, and much more. The evening fire pit meet-and-greets were an added bonus! The continental breakfasts were wonderful!

The location was spectacular. We could not have picked a better location for our family reunion. It was peaceful, we saw wildlife and a view of Mt. Rushmore, what more could anyone ask for. The staff was very friendly and very accommodating. This is a location we would return to. Words can't express the wonderful time we all had. You won't be disappointed.
