“Washington Chalet--Nice space and views, a bit outdated”
Reviewed August 4, 2011

We stayed in the White House Resort's Washington Chalet for 2 nights in July. The chalet is located across the street from the hotel, but you check in at the hotel and can use it's pool etc. The chalet was cute and it was nice to have a kitchen, washer/dryer etc. Huge deck with a view of the side of Mt Rushmore (although farther away than I had thought!). 2 queen beds were on the top loft area (not good for those afraid of heights) with 2 single pull out beds in the living area. The 2 pull out beds were unsleepable--the mattresses are so out of date and worn that we had to remove them from the frames and stack them to make them even sort of comfortable for one person to sleep on. The pull out beds and lack of curtains on all of the windows would be my biggest complaints. Also a steep walk up the driveway back from town but not a huge deal to us. Overall a good value for the size of the place, as long as you don't have more than 4 people and so can sleep in the loft beds!

Pet friendly, like most of the hotels in the area. I would say the price was competitive, but it was the 3rd hotel we stopped at & each one said "Normally the price is this but I can give it to you for this" (all the same price). Room was okay, the carpet was filthy. The shower was super shiny but there was hints of mold on the curtain. Skip the neighboring buffets unless you like dead insects in ur food. We liked Teddys deli.

Unfortunately, on our driving holiday we were staying in Keystone for 3 nights and we wished that we had chosen another location. When we arrived at the hotel it looked like the receptionist was having trouble locating our reservation. She just kept scanning the computer and left us standing around without explanation. Eventually, we were provided with a room which, unfortunately, overlooked the indoor pool and had no natural daylight so we had to have the lights on at all times. There was no coffee machine in the room and you had to go to reception to get a cup of coffee and then get the milk and sugar from the reception desk whilst the staff watched. Presumably, so that you didn't take too much!

Wherever you eat for breakfast, DO NOT go to the Railhead buffet restaurant. The food was the worst that we have ever, and I mean ever, eaten. The food was disgusting: Rock hard bacon, cold potatoes and scrambled eggs. The waitress looked like she couldn't care less about us. A far better option is Keystone House which is the other end of the main street, at the end of the boardwalk. Ruby House provided us with an excellent evening meal for 2 evenings.

The hotel looked clean with fresh paint but it felt dirty. The shower was not draining out and the tub did not look clean. The toilet seat rocked because the bolts were not tightened. The breakfast in the restaurant connected to the hotel had dirty silverware and cups and the quality of the food was poor. The coffee and juices had no flavor because they were watered down. The hot tub looked like it had a ring around it.

Stay away. In fact stay away from Keystone. Stay somewhere in Custer State Park. A tent maybe.

They flash $49.99 as the lowest price, but this price is only if you are single and they have a room left. Still is was ok as we got a room for $65
Upbeat reception with lots of smile
no bad surprises
