This was our second stop on our travels from New Jersey to California and by far, one of the most memorable. In our planning process, we made every attempt to book at local, privately owned establishments rather than the big chains. Not only did the online reviews give glowing recommendations for BCL, but the history of the building alone (a firehouse at one point in time) was all we needed to seal the deal. As if that weren't enough, Tammy spent time filling me in on local activities for our daughter (I was afraid the only thing to do in Keystone was to see Mt. Rushmore.....how WRONG I was!), nearby places to visit and restaurants in the area. Details are key in unfamiliar areas, so we were grateful for her input and direction even BEFORE we arrived.

We arrived late (after the lobby closed), but were welcomed with a key left at the front door, along with a personalized note inviting us to breakfast the following morning and assurance that we could take our time getting up and ready before making our way down to check in. (Most places require either a kidney donation or your first born before they let you sleep in their beds for the night.) BREAKFAST.....oh my WORD!!! I wasn't expecting a HOME COOKED meal with options (and neither was my family!!). We were there for three mornings, each with something new on the "menu" and service like no other. Tammy multi-tasks effortlessly (making breakfast, checking guests in AND out, answering calls AND giving each and every person in the lobby time and attention). Her advice and direction were invaluable....we didn't waste time in places that didn't interest us and we enjoyed those she thought would best suit us. Awesome.

As for the lodge itself.....CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN!!! The rug was so new our shoeprints were visible after we walked across it. The bathroom was SPOTLESS, the beds were COMF and the air conditioning was not only effective in cooling the room, but also in keeping any outside noise to a minimum.

It's difficult to find a business these days where you truly walk away with the notion that the owners not only take pride in their establishment, but honestly STRIVE to make you happy by creating an atmosphere that you can feel at home in. This place and its owners are the real deal. Real people with a real interest in dedicating time and attention to a great experience for their guests. Priceless.

One last thing....I'm not a souvenir person, HOWEVER, my very favorite souvenir from our 8,000 mile road trip was the embroidered Battle Creek Lodge fleece blanket. Best $15 we spent along the way AND a great keepsake from our favorite "hotel".

We stayed at the Battle Creek Lodge after attending the Antiques Roadshow in Rapid City.
The BCL couldn't have been more different from the similarly priced chain motel in Rapid City, or from the chain motels that fill Keystone. A small place, it has charm and individuality. Even though afternoon was hot, we felt drawn to the deck with the woods around, a charming place to sip a drink before dinner. The management are very friendly, and a wonderful breakfast -- much more than the "Continental Breakfast" they advertise -- gave us a great start the next day.

Room Tip: The BCL is small, so getting a room at all in the tourist season is an accomplishment! We called relatively early in the day.

Fantastic, great, wonderful, awesome. Just a few words to describe Tammy and the BCL. From the moment you make your reservation to the moment you leave (and thereafter), the details are there. Exactly what you expect from a locally owned and operated establishment. It's like your home away from home. Thank you Tammy for making our trip memorable.

We are from Watertown SD. We were kinda new at traveling to tourist attracting areas,We read reveiws online and called for reservations.Tammy was very polite and helpful with our booking of our stay. After along day of traveling and site seeing. We were on our way to BCL when we had received a couple of phone calls our Daughter was going in for emergency C-section on top of many complications. It was quite the day. When we made it to BCL we were greeted by Tammy.
She was so kind she'd asked about our trip. We told her about our daughter. She was so caring and concerned. During our stay she would ask about our Daughter and Grandson, like she was part of our family. Rooms were clean, the continental Breakfast was good. when we left it felt like she was family. Everyone was kind. Yes we will definetly be back. Our Daughter and Grandson (Oliver Nicholas)are doing well. Everyone there was willing to help or do whatever they could to be very helpfull to all of there Guests. Thank You!

Room Tip: Location,Location,Location is very good choice from downtown Keystone& Keystone is kinda the center location for all other tourist attractions around The Back Hills!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your review! It really is our goal to make our "guests" (or "friends" as we would rather call them) feel at home while they are with us. I know it sounds a little bit cheesy, but it is true. We really do consider you part of our Battle Creek Family and we really do care not only about your time with us, but about YOU. We were so excited to hear that you were welcoming a new Grandson into the world -- but even more excited to hear that your daughter and grandson were okay! We hope that one day you will bring them along and show them the Black Hills:-) Until Next Time ~ We wish you.

We also chose BCL after reading the reviews here. We wanted an option that wasn't too expensive as it was just one hotel stay of many on our trip. This was a great choice. Price was reasonable, the room was clean, location was great and within walking distance of the main strip through Keystone.

Tammy is great. She is friendly and helpful from the time of booking and even after we left (as I forgot a shirt there, which she kindly mailed back to me).

We would stay here again.
