Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mt Rushmore / Keystone
Ranked #3 of 13 Hotels in Keystone
Reviewed September 7, 2008

Recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Keystone. After reading many reviews, this seemed like the best place and we weren't disappointed.

I had read some reviews about people wanting to stay outside of the downtown area because of the noise. When we arrived in Keystone, we cracked up. The "downtown" area is only about a block long and the down has 300 people....how noise can it be. We had no issues with noise and it was an easy walk to local shops and resturants. Also, Mt Rushmore is about a 5 min drive and crazy horse is about 30 mins.

The breakfast was excellent. They had cereal, muffins, bagels, fruit, coffee, tea, and juices.

If you are looking for a resturant in town, I recommend Rubys. Good food and atmosphere.

I highly recommend this hotel. It is well worth it!

There turned out to be a lot of hotels in Keystone, and most advertising a much lower rate than we obtained online for the HI Express, but there is no way of knowing how good the rooms were in comparison. The rooms at the HI were excellent, and a good size. The staff were very helpful, and instantly changed our room when they discovered it smelled of smoke. A nice indoor pool was evidently popular with lots of kids. The breakfast room was too small for the numbers however and it was the uusal plastic breakfast that included breakfasts have become in the US. A good location for Mount Rushmore and the region. Keystone is not large and the restaurants do not offer a lot of choice, but if you stay in Keystone, then the HI is a good choice, but check out the rates first.

Save your money, you might as well go to a motel 6. The noise from the rooms (kids jumping off the beds onto the floor) above us lasted until midnight even though we called the office and complained. The breakfast area is too small to accomodate the guests. The swimming pool is ok, however the spa is lukewarm at best. This place needs a new owner and more money invested in it. When it rains (which is often), the side door freezes up and cannot be unlocked until it dries out, when I mentioned this to the staff, I was told to simply wait and they were aware of the problem. We are staying at this place currently and we will be looking to relocate, our chances are slim since this is high season.

Three of us stayed here in a room with a King Bed and a fold out sofa bed. The hotel is in a very good spot for local attractions such as Mt Rushmore (5mins away) and is walking distance into town (3mins).
The room was clean and had good facilties including an in room fridge. The King bed was comfortable and a good choice of pillows. I didn't sleep on the sofa bed, but I heard it was suitable. Bathroom was clean and functional. Insulation between rooms seemed good.
The included brekfast is quite good, with a reasonable selection to choose from and tea/coffee available all day. They have a pool and whirlpool which we didn't try, but they looked OK.
Staff were freindly and helpful. We would definetly stay here again.
Don't miss Sylvan Lake, it was a great place to visit.

Booked a 2-night stay here in late October. Having not been to South Dakota before, I figured being near Mt Rushmore as Keystone is would be really good. The hotel itself is very nice, clean, typical HI Express and I stay in a lot of them around the country on business. This time of year however, there is virtually nothing open in Keystone, save for one restaurant and all the other attractions and places to eat were closed, so we had to drive over to Hill City for dinner. Not really a problem, but just be aware of this if you visit outside the traditional summer tourist season. Keystone is the ultimately tacky tourist trap, but the access to Mt Rushmore is hard to beat.

This hotel was perfect...clean, convenient, and safe. We had debated on whether to stay at this property or the Best Western. The Best Western looked nice but was far removed from the town site...you wouldn't be able to walk anywhere. The Holiday Inn was a short walk to dinner and shopping. You will not go wrong with this choice.

HOTEL PROS:
New and clean
Nicely decorated
Well situated - short walk to the main drag in town
Nice pool

HOTEL CONS:
Hotel staff - not equipped to handle a complaint
The rooms do not have mini refrigerators

We stayed 1 night at this hotel so that we could visit Mount Rushmore. The hotel is nice. It's clean and situated quite close to the main street. The decor is country - pine furniture in the rooms and the libby is decorated with animal head trophies on the walls and there is an antler chandelier. We did however have some trouble with the counter staff, who are young and cannot really handle a customer complaint.

We were travelling with our 8 month old son and had specifically requested a fridge for the baby bottled. Upon arriving, we first had to wait while the young woman at the counter fielded a personal phone call. As we were checking in, we asked if the room had a fridge as requested and she said no, only the suites did. We explained that we had requested a fridge and she simply repeated the fact that only the suites have fridges. We asked how much a suite was and she said they were all booked. No smile, no apology . We explained that we were surprised because we booked with Holiday Inn's main line and they said that the room would have a fridge. We were then told that the hotel had been there for 7 years and she did not know why we we were told the room had a fridge. The other staff member then piped up and said that the central booking often made mistakes and also often overbooked their hotel!

I admit that I got upset at this point and the staff member then continued to only speak with my husband as if I was not there - she offered to let me put the bottles in the office fridge and come down at night when they were needed. I asked her to speak to me directly and she basically would not even look at me.

Using the office fridge to store something we feed our infant wasn't a solution for us so we used our cooler and some ice. We had asked to speak to the manager when he came back, but he never did.

Ultimately, not having a fridge was not that big a deal, but our issue is the way the staff handled our complant - it was just obvious that they did not care that we were not receiving what we had expected.

We did find out the next day that the young woman who had been checking us in was in fact the owner/operator's daughter so that probably explains the lack of customer service.
