“Everything I expected”

Definitely lives up to the hype. No charge to get in but there is a parking fee – for which you get a permit valid for the rest of the year. I went twice – on the evening I arrived and again the next morning. The evening talk and ceremony was very moving then afterwards the faces were illuminated.
The natural illumination on the faces is much better in the morning. If you are going to walk along the Presidential Trail start at the Visitor Centre/Accessible end and you will be going mostly down the steps. If you start at the Sculptor’s Studio it is mostly uphill I discovered (but this could mean you deserve an ice cream afterwards :) The ranger led walk was good – the 10.00am one is always the busiest according to “my” ranger.
Food is cafeteria style and was ok. Being able to have free coffee refills all day was outstanding!

“This is our heritage, man!”

The first time we approached the road to Mt Rushmore, I had goose bumps. When you finally get out of the car and see the four presidents, how can you not be moved? The neatest thing was how high up on the mountain the four faces are. It's a totally different feel from what you see in pictures. By all means, take the walking trail to see each president from a different angle and then end up in the sculptor's studio. Perhaps my highlight was meeting Nick Clifford, one of the original workers on the face of the mountain! Great bookstore & exhibits and the food concessions are well above-average.

“Very Enjoyable.”

It is fun to look at all the state flags. Plan to spend time to watch the movie about the making of the memorial and also to visit the museum. Early October was a great time to visit.

“Worth the six hours drive from Denver, Colorado”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

I was tired when we got to Keystone and all I wanted was to go to the hotel but we stopped momentarily for a quick glance of the Memorial and the first thing I said was that, "Ok, so the memorial is watching over the parking lot." I was not too impressed at this point.

The next day, we went back to actually see the Memorial. There were not too many people at this time of the year and that is just perfect so we did not have to fight for parking space or crowds of tourist. We stopped at a point on the road where others stopped for a SPECTACULAR view of the National Memorial, towering above the treetops, really great! We then entered the memorial to look closely, we also took photos of "profile" of Pres Washington.

The Memorial is lit up between 6-8 each night so we went back that night as well.

Another plus to drive to Mt. Rushmore is passing through the NEEDLES Highway and stopping to take in the majesty of the pine forest, it is amazing!

We stayed in Keystone and most of the stores are closed but there were a few that are opened from which we bought some native American jewelry, chocolates and dinner was filling at Barlee Cafe and Bar next door.

There is no fee except for parking fees to the Memorial. There is a book store and gift shop as well.

From the views driving up to the Memorial, walking in and going through all the state flags, getting closer views to seeing it lit up at night - worth every moment! The price was great (FREE), with the exception of a one-time parking fee (good for a year), so you can go back as many times as you wanted. We went a couple of times, including back at night for the lighting ceremony (check the calendar for seasonal times). Very patriotic...makes me proud to be an American!! The pictures and stories from it's origin on site was very impressive! We also enjoyed the Ranger Tour (and the facts and views shared along the way to the Sculptor's Studio)! Awesome!
