Reviewed August 21, 2012

Penmachno Hall is in a great location with easy access to the breathtakingly beautiful Snowdonia. We were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived. Simon and Lauraine are friendly, easygoing, hospitable and obviously love what they do. They are also very knowledgeable and able to provide a lot of information and recommendations about the area. The rooms are well appointed with great views. We would have preferred a proper shower rather than just a hand shower (yellow room) but the hot bath with the bath salts was great at the end of a long day. The bowl of fresh fruit in the room and a good stock of toiletries was welcome.

Hi Maggie,

Thanks for the review and apologies for the delayed response (Trip Advisor have finally removed the need for me to re-register our identity as owner of the property by sending personal financial info to them - YAY!)

We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us, and thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us.

We are aware that many people prefer to have the option of a shower but this is currently not feasible in the Yellow and Orange rooms due to the free-standing nature of the Victorian baths in these two rooms. To accommodate showers in these rooms would need some major alterations to the bathrooms to avoid water the risk of water damage to ceilings of the dining room and morning room below. This is not something that we currently have planned but we do review our services every year.

We would advise all guests for whom a shower is important to select the Blue Room, as this is the only room that currently has a shower.

Really can't believe how lucky we were to find such a wonderful B&B for our stay in Wales. From the moment we arrived (greeted with tea and cake), we were shown the utmost hospitality and nothing was too much trouble. Simon and Lauraine obviously love what they do because they do it so well and with such enthusiasm. The rooms are beautifully decorated and filled with special little touches that show how well thought through this little B&B is, not to mention that the whole place is spotless. The gardens are lovely, too. Whether you are after a simple, peaceful stay, or want to sample gourmet cooking and one of the best wine lists that we have encountered, this is the one to book.

Room Tip: We had a peep in all the rooms and they're all lovely.

Hi "Kryten"

Thank you for your great review.

I, Simon, am especially pleased to hear that you enjoyed the wine list so much! You will have to come again as I am constantly changing / adding new wines as I come across new "favourites"

For anyone reading this and expecting some huge comprehensive wine list please be aware that, with only 3 letting rooms, and catering for residents only, we do only keep about 12 - 15 wines on the list at any one time, but I always try to keep it "interesting"

We chose Penmachno Hall on the basis of other positive reviews and were not disappointed. Simon was an excellent host providing lots of useful advice and information, and catering for all of our needs - including helping us out with an early breakfast on a Sunday morning. We stayed in the Blue Room, which was just like the video on the website, and enjoyed the wonderful view from the window seat. The hall is full of interest and has a very attractive garden. The location was fine for trips into Snowdonia - the road network is very good. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay and we hope to return.

Room Tip: Take advantage of the knowledge of your hosts. We were offered lots of good advice on places to visi...

Hi Sanuk,

Thanks for the really great review, it is much appreciated.

We are especially pleased to hear that you found the Virtual Tour video, on our website, to have been both useful and accurate. We would encourage everyone to have a look at this before selecting which room to stay in, to ensure that they get what they are looking for.

The hosts were very friendly, hospitable and helpful.
The room was spacious, comfortable and restful - full of quirky character!
Very well provided with toiletries and refreshments.
A good nights sleep followed by excellent breakfasts. Very well located for Snowdonia and all N Wales attractions.
We did just miss a decent TV in the room, and a small chair squeezed in!

Room Tip: The blue room has a very good outlook

Hi David,

Thanks for taking the time to write your great review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us so much.

Your point regarding the TV is appreciated, and this is something that we will be looking at addressing in the next few months. We realise that peoples expectations of TV screen size are somewhat higher than they were when we fitted the existing TV's. We will announce any changes via our Facebook page (Facebook.com/PenmachnoHall) as and when they happen, so keep an eye out there.

If you are looking for a place to stay, this is it.
And it is not just that it is perfectly situated right in the countryside a little walk from the village with the walks starting from the front door, the yummy food, the impeccable service and the cosy rooms. At first you might be taken aback with the friendliness of the hosts, but after only a short while it all starts to make sense and you find that it is part of the amazing service you get here. We are used to stay in B&Bs and they have all been places to stay while the destinations have been the surrounding walks. Next time we come here (and I hope it will be soon) Penmachno Hall itself will be our destination. Let yourself go and enjoy this place.

Room Tip: Talk to Simon and he will advice you which room will best suit your requirements.

We stayed at Penmachno for 3 nights in April and received a very warm welcome – including a delicious Welsh Cake and much needed cuppa. We stayed in the blue room which has really lovely views (even from the bathroom!) and a very good shower. The beds were comfy and the room had everything we could need including a bowl of fruit, lovely fluffy towels and a well stocked hospitality tray (including real milk on request – always a nice touch). There isn’t really room to sit in the room, but it wasn’t a problem because guests have the use of a very pleasant sitting room downstairs. It was cosy and comfortable and we were made to feel very much at home. The house is beside a very pretty stream and surrounded by lovely countryside with plenty of walks straight from the front door. Simon and Lauraine have managed to get the right balance of being attentive without being intrusive and offered lots of helpful advice and information about the area. The Welsh supper was delicious and the breakfasts excellent – don’t miss the sausages! We hope we’ll be back soon.

Hello to FamilyBrosel,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your lovely review. We really appreciate the time that people take to leave these reviews as it really does help us ensure that we offer the type of service that people are looking for.

We are aware that the Blue room has limited seating, with just the small window seat. We continually look at adding further seating to the room but have yet to find anything suitable that retains the spaciousness of the room (the bed being a 6' wide superking- or twin single beds - taking up such a large footprint!). We will continue our search and if any additional seating is added we will announce it (with pictures) on our Facebook page.

This review is a long time coming. Me and my wife have been visiting Penmachno Hall (PH) since 2005, and I can’t believe we have not written a review.

If there was a category which was above “Excellent”, I would have no hesitation in placing PH into this category. Dubai has a six star hotel, North Wales has Penmachno Hall.

The location of PH is superb, if you’re looking for peace and tranquillity. Rolling hills, forests and the occasional “baah baah” from the nearby sheep awaits visitors to PH. PH is an excellent base to explore the beauty of North Wales, with numerous walks, rivers, mountain bike tracks within a short distance away.

Simon and Lauraine are excellent hosts in every way. They are extremely friendly and welcoming, and they always go that extra mile where possible to help their visitors. The food on offer is homely and very tasty, and the breakfasts filling. I would personally recommend the Bacon & Sausage sandwich; the Scouse stew and the Penmachno Hall roast chicken, but not all at once though.

As I am writing this review, we have just visited for the 12th time. We cannot wait for our next visit. It's like going from home to home.
