“Simply outstanding”
Reviewed February 25, 2008

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left our stay here was fabulous.

The owners really make you feel at home and go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need.

Our room was just perfect - if you are planning a visit ask for Room 1. An amazing four poster bed, seating area with open fire (perfect for a chilly winter Sunday afternoon) and big bathroom. Yes, the tv is small but it not meant to be the focal point of the room and there is so much to get out and see you shouldn't need to watch the tv!

The food is first class with a great choice from a variety of menus. Proper food, properly cooked. Breakfast is also excellent with a wide variety of hearty plates to get you going on a cold morning.

The place has a lovely relaxed atmosphere - think open fires, big arm chairs and sleepy dogs.

We liked it so much we've booked our next visit already.

Have just got back from two nights at the Royal. A lovely hotel with good food and friendly staff. Very busy with locals at weekends but we could relax in the library while we waited on dinner. Lots of quirky pictures throughout the hotel. The room had four poster, sitting area and dressing area. The TV could have been better, it was a small portable without the advertised extra channels, but that is our only complaint.

  • Liked — rooms and public areas
  • Disliked — TV and slippy bathroom floor

i spent just one night in this hotel, i was in Comrie for work, but it was FANTASTIC.
Room was clean and in very English style, at the bar they have a very good service and very good beers too... in the room they provide Molton Brown soap etc.. the same you found at london SPA airport. they have also a nice garden (English style of course) and the hotel is situated in the very center of Comrie.
We also had dinner there and it was very good. After spent a night there you can understand why a Queen was there......

This was a last minute two night break. The service and food were very good and th eportions were generous. Unfortunatley the room was shabby and the bathroom was both grubby and had a cracked wash hand basin. Not what we were expecting.

Simply outstanding staff, room rate includes gourmet dinner and breakfast, great little town. Of all the places we stayed in Scotland, this was the best value by a generous margin. We stayed in fun attic rooms, sloped ceilings, four-poster bed, excellent bath/shower facilities.

We selected the village of Comrie as a base from which to visit central Scotland by car over several days. We spent four days at the Royal, and greatly enjoyed our stay.

We booked on a dinner bed and breakfast basis. If we had not done this, there would have been few other options - there is a fish and chip shop just down the road, and a local restaurant the Dei'ls Cauldron (named for a local landmark). Given the quality of the Royals' dining offering (it has an AA rosette and a Michelin "Bib Gourmand" endorsement) we saw no reason to try anywhere else.

The full range of the evening menu is open under the DB&B option with no surcharges and for a three course meal this offers good value when compared to the a la carte prices.

As with some other UK country hotels we have stayed in, the Royal had the (to us) curious idea that when we wanted to eat, we would instead go to the bar for a drink and review the menu. Happily, they soon recognised that when we wanted to eat, we wanted to sit down and do that. Service in this and all respects is excellent.

Rooms are furnished to a high standard, as are the public areas, and the hotel is clearly popular with locals for meetings and formal dinners. As it has two dining rooms and a large lounge, these events did not impact on us at all.

Comrie is a good central location from which to undertake day visits to such places as Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, St Andrews etc and this worked very well for us.

The hotel faces a tiny square, with ample parking, and next to it a Charles Rennie Mackintosh shop and apartment building which would be featured if this were Glasgow, but is not even mentioned in Comrie! Down the road at the boundary is a visitor centre and also a crystal and glassware outlet, and Comrie also has the "Earthquake House" - an old seismic station as it is almost on the Highland Faultline.

The apartment in the Mackintosh building is rented by the Landmark Trust (see their web-site for details) and this, with meals at the Royal, make an appealling alternative.

Service was excellent. Indeed one day we returned to find that our washing, done by hand and left in the bathroom to dry, had been taken away, dried, and returned folded without a word (or a charge!). At meals, service was always enthusiastic, but some of the younger waiting staff needed some further training and polishing to bring them up to the standard of the food. Senior staff were excellent, and offered useful suggestions for our travel plans.

We greatly enjoyed the Royal and recommend it without hesitation.

Lovely two rooms for us (fourposter) and our two sons (twin beds) on first floor, on separate corridor. Really good food with local twist (ie a rather tasty spoonful of haggis with duck or venison). Uncoloured kippers or haddock for breakfast. Rather damaged our prejudices about the paucity of quality food in Scotland. Very nice, relaxed service from attentive staff. Two characterful, charming public rooms. Good range of well-signposted local walks in really pretty flat and/or hilly countryside (ask for walks map). We even had good weather! Central location in relatively small village.
