Gateway Inn & Cabins

A lot of the reviews say it just like it is: This place is rustic funky, a stone's throw from the park, quiet, clean, no closets or drawers, plenty of hot water, nicely stocked store. For just $100/night, we have a HUGE place above the grocery/restaurant: 3 bdrms, small bathroom with new shower stall and shower head, good size living room, good size fridge, microwave, and coffee maker, directTV. The owners are helpful and gracious, albeit their English is pretty spotty. After hiking all day, it's a pleasure to have a really comfortable place to come back to where we can take hot showers, relax, heat up some food in the microwave, and do emails using their highspeed FREE WiFi. I emphasize FREE because we have been to numerous high end resort & business hotels at which we've had to pay $10-25 per day for internet.

On June 27 I spent one night at the Gateway Inn. I stayed in one of the rooms above the restaurant/store. The room was nothing exciting, and the bathroom was vintage from the early 1970's. If you are looking for a cheap place to stay near Mount Rainier, there is nothing closer. With a name like Gateway, you would expect to see the entrance to the park, and sure enough it is right there.

I had booked this thru Expedia.com - since I had never been to the area, I had placed a lot of premium on the location (right next to the Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park entrance). I was expecting a nice place but it turned out to be a pokey little hole in the wall with virtually no amenities - 14 inch TV, washbasin with a gaping hole, not-so-clean toilets, a window with only a lace curtain that woke me up at 5am...

Owners need to spend money to upgrade this place - it needs a really serious upgrade to justify the prices charged. Or they should drop the prices by 75% - at that level it will be value for money.

Room Tip: Dont stay here!

We reserved a log cabin with fireplace before hiking trails at Paradise, Mount Rainier. It was a great base camp at affordable value. Our cabin was nice with country rustic appeal. Actually, the cabin we stayed was where the movie "The track of the cat" was filmed in the 50's with Robert Mitchum. The lodge has a restaurant, (hot breakfast and great burgers with home fries), and groceries, (bottled water, trail snacks and sandwiches). Perfect location just at entrace to National Park. Also, keep your entrance receipt, it's valid for 1 week...

I stayed late winter 2012. The RV park offers hookups...but no bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, fire rings. Just a grass/dirt area right up against the highway. Sites are tight together. Even though you're self-contained (unless you pay for full hookups your entire stay), you can't dump your tanks.
Just know what you're paying for.

It was late in the day in September and as my wife and I are rather old we stopped here because it was the first motel out of Mt. Rainier National Park. Log cabin with fireplace was quaint but lighting was dim and TV had only one channel for $153.17. Food was fair. Wine was from a jug that had been open too long.

Room Tip: Stop early enough so you do not have to take the first vacancy.

Pros: Log Cabin, was rustic and I loved the setting. Beds were ok, shower water was hot. Very cozy feeling. Wood burning fireplace (have to ask for the rooms that have this, if you want it) TV had lots of channels. Was quiet the 1st night, but had a fighting couple next to us the next, which was kind of annoying. It was after 8 pm, so there was no way to contact the manager...I guess I might have called the main #, but not sure if anyone would have answered. Nisqually entrance is RIGHT near the Inn...I walked up to the booth, and was going to go for a walk into the park, and she showed me a trail, which was kind of cool...

Cons...toilet wasn't cleaned, paper on floor when we first arrived, no hand soap, but there was shampoo. Smokey smell in room. I felt that for the price, there should have been a continental breakfast available. There were restaurants within driving distance, but they were sit down places, and to eat out EVERY meal got a little expensive. We had the hamburger meal and blackberry pie at the Gateway, and both were excellent. No drawers or closet space, so just left my clothes in the suitcase so it wasn't messy.

The minuses weren't that bad though, and I would definitely go back.
