Perhaps due to the proximity of Seattle, the Mt Rainier south-west gateway town of Ashford did not seem to sport a wide offering of hotels. The name brand chains were noticeably absent. Those lodging properties that chose to market over the internet had minimalist websites. So we made our choice based on curb appeal and selected the Nisqually Lodge. It looked nice on the outside and turned out to be the same on the inside. The smallish lobby area was even enhanced by the ambiance of a gas fireplace.

Our room was very clean, sufficiently spacious, and functional. The bathroom was clean albeit with what appeared to be a low-end linoleum floor. And we could hear shower noise from adjacent room[s]. Good thing our neighbors were otherwise quiet. Decorations were tasteful and adequate albeit inexpensive. The lodge had wireless internet which worked very well. There was a nice breakfast with excellent fruit and brand name cans of juice as well as the usual coffee, bagels, etc.

The biggest plus of the Nisqually Lodge was its location – just 10 minutes from the Rainier National Park entrance. The biggest minus of the Nisqually Lodge was that it sits in an area without cell phone coverage. We needed to make a few phone calls and thankfully the wireless internet setup handled a voip connection.

Location very convenient and room was clean and quiet. We found the staff friendly and equally enjoyed conversations with other guests from around the world! I would only suggest to separate the drinks from other continental breakfast items so more than 2 people may make their breakfast at the same time. An nice addition would be instant oatmeal? Best for us was it was one of few area lodgings that offered 1 nite only lodging. We would definately return.

Reading some of the reviews of this establishment prior to staying here made me a bit anxious regarding the disposition of the proprietors. However I found the staff to be very accommodating and any questions I had were answered with a friendly attitude and helpful advice. The lodge itself is very clean with large rooms that were very comfortable. The free continental breakfast is basic but more than adequate for me. For those who are considering this lodge for their visit to Mt. Rainier, be advised that it is about 6 miles from the entrance to the Park and from the entrance it is a further 18 miles (40 minute drive) to the Paradise area of the Park. I had no problem going back and forth but forewarned is forearmed!

While there were no frills, it was a nice, large, super-clean room. Comfy bed and invigorating shower...no wimpy showerhead! A word of advice, we stopped for dinner at the Wild Berry restaurant down the road...don't go. Their $14 "fish & chips" dinner was frozen french fies and Mrs. Pauls breaded fish patties.

We turned up at the Nisqually Lodge on spec as we wanted to stay in the Mount Rainier area. The location is great, only about 6 miles from the park entrance, and as we had a room at the back of the lodge it didn't really matter that it is on the main road.

The room was spacious and clean and the hot tub is a plus, but our stay was marred by the owners' unfriendly attitude. Like some of the other reviews have mentioned, we were made to feel that they were doing us a huge favour by letting us stay there and taking our money. When we were given a room right beside the lobby I asked if there were others available as I was worried it would be noisy when breakfast started in the morning (it was). The owner just said it would be fine. I later saw that there were other rooms free, he just hadn't taken my request seriously.

If you can put up with the less than welcoming attitude, this is a decent place to stay and reasonable value for money.

My boyfriend and I had decided to wing our accommodations on one of the nights we were in the Mt. Rainier area. Driving down the road, we discovered that our choices were more limited than we had thought. Initially, we checked out Whittaker's Bunkhouse, where we realized there was no TV. Bringing this to the attention of the very nice innkeeper, she suggested that we check out Nisqually Lodge if we really needed a TV- we did. Sure, we're suppose to be enjoying nature and all that, but heck, we're attached to our creature comforts.

The innkeepers here are not friendly at all. If anything, they act like they are they doing you a HUGE favor by renting you a room. They gave us a really weird look when we asked to see the room beforehand and just waved us upstairs, saying the empty rooms were open. When we checked out, the woman seemed much friendlier and wished us a nice day- probably because she was glad we were leaving!

HOWEVER, these rooms are quite nice, a great value for the price, and make up for the surly service. There is TV with a decent number of channels to watch, AC, a nice clean bathroom, and best of all, it was quiet. We never heard anyone else! And we knew there were others based on the cars parked outside.

As a previous reviewer stated- you have to compare this to what else you can find in the area and this place is definitely way better than the others.
