We (family w/kids) were staying in the Madison as part of our sightseeing trip to NYC. Hotel is a bit off the beaten path (meaning Interstates), but not too far. As far as sightseeing goes, it is 25 minutes car ride to Newark Penn Station, where you can park your car for $10 ($7 on weekend) and ride a PATH train to WTC or 33 Avenue for 1.75 one-way trip. There's a train station next door, but it is not economical for families at return trip pushing $25 per person. So, it isn't "next door to Times Square" by any mean, but for the rate I've got I'm not complaining. My GPS unit had no problems finding the place but, for some reason, placed it on the other side of the road (hotel is very visible from the Madison Avenue, so it was not a problem).
The Madison Hotel is, as far as I understand, more an event and banquet place (there were 2 weddings and a family reunion going on there on the weekend we were there) than a place for a casual traveller. Therefore it's decor is a bit more luxurious than an average 3* place. Other than the bling factor, you have a decent-sized room (with double beds, not queens), nice washroom, plenty of free parking and half-decent hotel breakfast in the morning (cereal, yoghurt, pastries, bagels with cream cheese or jam, juice/tea/coffee, but no hot items like eggs or sausages). There's no fridge in the room. Rooms could use a bit of renovation, but it will probably increase prices significantly. Cleanliness is adequate, service is good and friendly.

I would definitely recommend the Madison Hotel to a buddy planning to visit the area. Solid place for a decent prise.

Thank you for staying with us and commenting about your stay on Trip Advisor. Our location next to the train station is truly an asset in that for only $23 you will be delivered into Penn Station only 6 blocks away from Times Square in only an hour (no driving and wasting gas, no parking expense, no sitting in traffic, etc.). A cab ride from WTC to Times Square will cost much more than that and may take just as long. So when you add the gas expense, the parking expense, the round trip ticket on PATH and the taxi ride up town I am sure it would be just as economical to walk out our door and hop on the train for a quick ride in the center of NYC. I am glad you recommend us and that you found service good and friendly and hope you stay with us whenever you return to northern NJ or NYC.

This is a very pleasant hotel and is a nice change from cookie cutter chain hotels. Its a good value and in a good location. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. My room a/c fan was quite noisy and does not cycle off when desired temp is reached. Train didn't bother me but I was facing Madison side.

A typical dated, chintzy hotel trading on a bygone age. The decor is dated, the breakfast is average, but the sound of trains blarring their horns throughout the night is too much. The staff are the saving grace, professional and helpful, thanks guys.

Thank you for your feedback, I am glad you found the staff "professional and helpful" but disappointed that our traditional decor did not fit your tastes. We hope that our guests will look at us as a traditional, old school hotel with hands on welcoming and warm service. We want our guests to feel as if they were visiting a very close friend, warm beverages available whenever you wish, a warm fire, beautiful gardens, a book from our collection, a snack and beverage when you arrive, great food with many choices, a turned down bed with a little treat, etc. We feel that it separates us from those branded hotels that are hindered by brand standards regarding services offered and appearances of their hotels. In regards to the trains there is not much that can be done. The train passes through several small villages and goes past a high school and three universities and the horns are needed to alert people and keep them safe. We do not get many complaints but if you are a light sleeper and it wakes you up feel free to request a room facing Madison Avenue the next time you visit. Thank you again for your business and please feel free to visit us again.

This is such a comfortable family hotel. We were here to attend a wedding and found the grounds, the food, the service and the amenities to be excellent. Very friendly, helpful staff who really cared about our stay! We had easy access to NYC via the train (right across the parking lot) and family members enjoyed travelling in to sight see during the day. Rod's Steakhouse which is part of the hotel is fabulous! Loved this place.

I have stayed at the Madison Hotel 4 times for my college reunions and college events. This hotel is a real gem! The lobby is so beautiful, luxurious and beautifully decorated with wood paneling and a sunken conversation area, plus it has tons of additional conversations areas for people to gather. When my college girlfriends and I get together in the lobby in between the college events, we have always found a spot to claim as our own. It feels like someone's comfortable living room.
The rooms are very large and have wonderful furniture and the beds are very comfortable. In general, the place is spotless.
They have a very nice restaurant called Rod's Steak House which has a great atmosphere. It's been there since way before the new hotel was built next to it and annexed it. It's full of old-world atmosphere and lots of good food.
The prices are at the Madison are so reasonable that it might scare some off, thinking it's too good to be true, but try it because this place is the real deal! The reality matches the photos!

The Madison still shows its grand past. The lobby is nicely appointed. The room and bathroom were spacious and clean, but not up to date. Complimentary continental breakfast was very good, but there were only small tables to seat. Abundant parking space.

We stayed for two nights at the Madison for a wedding of dear friends' son. The glass enclosed solarium was the site of the wedding, and it provided a lovely setting for the ceremony. Afterwards, the guests enjoyed a superb appetizer time in a library room. The food here and at the reception in the adjoining room were excellent. The room was more than adequate. The lobby provided a choice breakfast in the a.m., and addtional snacks in the afternoon. We loved the surrounding area with all the historical sites and darling NJ towns.
