Description: Welcome to New Jersey's Legendary Steak HouseRod's Steak & Seafood Grille, an area landmark and winner of New Jersey Monthly's 'Best Steakhouse' award, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily as well as the finest Sunday Brunch in New Jersey. The restaurant's rich wood paneling and highly polished brass, lends a classic elegance to the sophisticated atmosphere. For an intimate and unique experience, dinner aboard the private Parlour Cars is sure to be remembered. Formerly the private domain of the rich and famous, these beautifully refurbished, turn of the century railway cars are exquisitely complimented by the haute cuisine of Rod's esteemed Executive Chef.

We chose Rod's because of its very high Trip Advisor recommendation rating as the venue to celebrate my wife's birthday. If you like antiques and old world charm then you will love the decor and ambiance. The service was also fine, but the food and one of the drinks (a Shirley Temple) were disappointing. We ordered escargots (OK), crab cake (fine) and crab bisque (the best dish for the evening said my 10 year old who has a VERY wide palate and I agreed with her. Main courses included sirloin steak (OK), T-bone steak (OK) and lamb (OK) but they were somewhat tasteless although cooked as ordered. The lobster mac and cheese was interesting and somewhat tasty. Veggies and mushrooms were pretty good. Overall we expected this restaurant to really deliver the goods when it came to steak and it did not. This is no Capitol Grill. It is indeed pricey, but it did not deliver on the outstanding steak as anticipated.

Rod's Steak & Seafood Grille is located in the historic Madison Hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful. They have a large glass atrium where weddings are held. There is a beautiful wooden bar in front of the main dining room with a grand piano nearby. You can also dine in a restored turn-of-the century train right outside the hotel with nice leather booths ("private Parlour Cars") which is fun, maybe once, unless you are a history buff.

Rod's Steak & Seafood grille is the "casual dining" alternative within the fancy hotel. It's cozy and dark. There is a large bar and an area behind the bar with extra seats. The dining room eating areas are of the "ye olde" type, wooden booths and tables under rafters and original beams.

For all the Pilgrim ambiance, the food is mediocre. You can get mini-hamburgers with a nice basket of skinny french fries or french fried potatoes. The entrees are decent and predictable. If you want the feel of a colonial inn, grab your Paul Revere hat and come on down. This place attracts wealthy patrons who live in the area as well as a young crowd. And some very moldy old Morris town folk that are just plain boring. It's just so so. Not really very interesting.

Instead of eating in Chatham, travel west a few miles on Main St. to Madison Ave. and go to Rod's in Convent Station for a truly memorable dining experience. You won't be sorry.

Come here every year for my Anniversary, Crab Bisque is delish, with a crab cake resting on top!
Cool decor, and vibe, the balcony has great seating, and the stained glass ceiling is so cool.

Rod's is always a pleasure to go to. Of course living across the street doesn't hurt. We love going there and on the last couple of visits have eaten at the Red Dog, which is something of a lighter menu if you don't want the whole sit down large steak dinner. We had the Oysters as an appetizer and they were fresh and delicious. The Mahi Taco's and the Lobster Roll also wonderful.

Filling yet not over the top. Would highly recommend.
