Paid a visit on Sturday night with another couple. Lovely outlook over the pier which will of course be even better in the summer. We had three course and 2 rounds of drinks all for £110. The food was very enjoyable and the two staff who served us were most pleasant. Will certainly visit again.

Despite the fact that the food was actually pretty good, the drama (and time) associated with actually getting it was stunningly bad. We have known of this location since it was The Dolphin and due to its association with The Red Lion Hotel, we wanted to try it during our visit. We were booked in for a party of 8 and upon arriving at 6pm, they only had expected 6. The restaurant was not very busy so the reason for the mistake wasn't obvious. Upon ordering our meal, we were told only 1 item was no longer available from the specials menu. Once our orders were placed though, three different wait staff came back 4 different times to tell us various other items we'd ordered were not available. During the 70 minute wait for our main courses, we were subjected to an extremely foul mouthed rant from the kitchen staff (presumably the chef?) complete with crashing pots, sounds of thrown utensils and more. It was almost as if Gordon Ramsay, or his biggest imitator, was in the kitchen having an absolute fit. Not something my children needed to hear in a restaurant. Eventually, the food did come out and as mentioned, was actually well made. One item was not prepared as described but given the wait and tirade from the kitchen, we didn't dare comment on it. The restaurant manager came over to ask how our meals were when we were done and no one offered drink refills. When we commented on the kitchen outburst, she didn't know what to say and wandered off without answering, never to be seen again. When offered dessert, we were told there were exactly one serving of two items from the entire menu available. For a party of 8, that didn't make for a good outcome. The three wait staff that did assist us were very nice and were clearly embarrassed by the circumstances but had no ability to change them. We were offered a 10 percent discount on the meal for the inconvenience, which we declined due to the overall experience. In the end, our waiter removed the drinks (our only round) from the bill and included the discount, which was reasonable. However, given the excellent experience we had at The Red Lion, the Bella Vista has a long, long way to go to reach those levels and the current manager and chef may not be up to the task - at all.

We had a very pleasant evening at the Bella Vista, food good, service good, but..................... I do not like to be asked continuously 'is everything alright with your meal?' We were asked this after each course (three) usually when we were all eating so unable to reply! I do think most people will complain if a meal isn't 'right' and express 'Thank you' and leave a tip (we did) if the food and service is good.
I am not blaming the young and efficient staff who looked after us but believe this to be a training flaw as it seems to be happening in other 'new' restaurants we have visited. It isn't necessary and I think embarrassing for both staff and customers alike.
