“Excellent hike”

My husband and I wanted to get out, get some exercise and take in some great views. Montgo Natural Park provided this! Its a relatively easy hike with wide paths but as you ascend it will become more difficult. The view of Denia is amazing and we almost felt we could see as far north as Valencia. Parking wasn't a problem for us at that time, but I could see it be difficult if there were a lot people out for a hike. Keep your eyes (and feet) alert to the dog poo (ugh!)...it is everywhere when you first start out on the path.

Thank Brenda A

We drove from Javea/Xabia up to the national park access tracks, parked and walked from there.

The flat path was occasionally rocky so we were glad of our walking boots from the start.

The path joined a gravel road, then (at the wooden info map board) we continued up the 'off-road' path to the summit (Cim).

Although rocky and winding, the path is (mostly) clear to follow and places where some people have made inappropriate short cuts (it's a nature reserve after all) are marked with crossed lines for no entry.

Without scrambling you can reach the 'near summit' and enjoy stunning views to the south and east (over Jesus Pobré and Javea). Within approximately twenty minutes of gentle climbing from there you reach the summit and can enjoy 360 degree views and take a victory photo at the summit marker ;)

We took two hours from car to summit, and one hour fifteen from summit to car.

We took 2 x 1.5 litre bottles of water and had some left afterwards. Really only needed it for the ascent.

Sun screen, hat and sensible walking shoes/boots essential.

Recommend!

We started at Jesus Probre, where the paths are relatively good, but as you get higher becoming more difficult, and not clearly marked. From this side you can also climb to the summit of the peak with the cross, which we also did and was a little more challenging. This will add about an hour to the walk. Reaching the summit of Montgo is so rewarding, the 360 degree views are well worth the climb. We descended the Javea side which is considerably more dangerous, and definitely more challenging, and would only recommend to the more agile climber, but the 'path' more clearly marked. As you get lower, the path zig zags all the way to the bottom. It was on our scrambling down the higher part that we lost our digital camera. The Javea route is much shorter, so therefore much quicker. I would recommend the Jesus Probre route to all, it is a very enjoyable walk even if you don't make it all the way to the top. The scent of the wild flowers and herbs, butterflies and of course the views are memorable. Take plenty of water, good gripping comfy shoes and allow up to eight hours depending on which way, how far and how fast you intend to walk.if any walkers find camera, please hand to Javea port tourist information centre

I was in Javea on a beach bootcamp holiday and this climb was part of the exercise regime. We ascended it at quite a pace, but it was worth it. As you climb higher the views get better. You can see right across to Ibiza at one point. It's well worth climbing for the sense of achievement when you get to the top.

We've done the round walking trip on the Montgo more than once. It's just a magnificent area if you love rambling with spectacular views all the way (you do need to allow 4 to 5 hours for the round walk but you can walk up and down from various sides).
