We don't get to Denia as much as we'd like. But when we do, we love to dine at Al Gusto, tucked away just off the top of the main street in Carrer Colon. Chef proprietor Phil Humphries cooks with flair and distinction - he is a chef about whom other local chefs speak highly too.
His food offering is wide-ranging and international - from steaks sizzled on slates to liver and bacon to subtly fragrant Thai cuisine. And a whole lot of other freshly-created dishes too.
My absolute favourites are Phil's savoury pancakes. Had one there as a starter in March filled with creamy herbs and spinach and ricotta and it was heavenly. He'll usually make you one, even if it's not on the menu.
This is a tiny restaurant (with front of house run by Phil's wife Hazel) so it's worth booking if you can. Lunchtime and evenings, he can be busy because he is as popular with local Spaniards as he is with the English. Menu del dia at lunchtime is a particular bargain. One of the best little restaurants in the heart of Denia.
