I loved La Cabana and I really Peniscola.
The hotel deserves more that 2 star in my opinion. The rooms are exceptionally clean - I had a sea view, which I could look at 24 hours - the castle and the old walled city lit up at night and miles of beach and promenade.
The breakfast was very good. I've never seen such a variety of fruit as there was during the first week, when the hotel was quite busy, and still plenty if the hotel was quiet. It was purely a continental breakfast, except for the fact (apart from the fruit) I think the hotel is quite famous for it's doughnuts etc. I'm afraid I couldn't resist the custard-filled at breakfast!
The restaurant (both indoor and outdoor and open to the public) serves very good food at reasonable prices. They are members of a couple of gourmet clubs and have special events, for example when I was there, there was an event called "los siete cuchillos" which meant there were 7 restaurants, which served their special dish for 7 days for 7 euros.
The staff, from the owners, to the cleaners, were lovely. Bear in mind however, that only 1 waiter and 1 waitress speak English, but that shouldn't be a problem if you don't have any Spanish.
I've left my beach chair there and hope to go back in September, otherwise next year.
