“Fascinating historic site meets luxury hotel”

We stayed at the Lorca Parador overnight as a break in the journey from Southern Spain to an early start at Alicante Airport and as a treat at the end of our holiday.

We found the Reception staff very helpful, friendly and efficient, showing us to our immaculate room with lots of explanations and smiles. Our expectations were fully met in terms of facilities, equipment, etc. and the bathroom was excellent.

We didn't take advantage of the hotel bus service into the town of Lorca (available for a small charge) as the weather was untypically horrible, but ate in the Helios Restaurant instead. Service was good and the food OK but nothing special and a bit expensive. However, the surroundings were impressive.

We didn't use the spa at all, but had a good walk round the ancient site which was very interesting. The whole concept of building the Parador without compromising the historical integrity of the site has been handled brilliantly.

We will certainly return during the summer so that we can have a proper walk around the town of Lorca and also use the Spa.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Caliphate Gate which will give you an interesting view.

We had watched the development of this site as we made a regular trip along the coast and were keen to see the finished product. The construction is very impressive and there is a lot of public space. We found all the staff to be fairly helpful though at least a smattering of Spanish helps. The dining room incorporates part of the ancient wall and this adds to the atmosphere in the room. We were able to order eggs at breakfast as we were asked by the waitress if we wanted fried or scrambled as there were none on display. As noted by previous reviewer the portions at dinner particularly the starters are gargantuan. We shared a starter and still found it too much.
The restaurant staff were helpful even recommending a cheaper alternative good wine when the original we ordered was out of stock. We found the view from the room on third floor to be fine though the windows are by virtue of the architecture fairly small. The only concernI we had was that the style seems geared to functions and corporate events and the terrace was commandeered by a large group during our brief stay. We would pay a return visit as we did not get a chance to fully explore the site and have yet to see the spa.

Room Tip: Higher floor and centre site seem best bet

As part of our summer travellings in Spain we stayed for 3 nights at this Parador. We had high expectations with it only having been opened 1 month previously by Queen Sofia. The Pardor is on a spectacular site, in the grounds of and forming part of the Castle at Lorca. Although very modern both externally and internally the architecture is very sucessfully integrated with the castle ruins. All parts of the communal areas have extremely high ceilings giving the impression of being in a vaulted ancient building.
Our room was a side room which was a shame as it didn't have the best of views. There was some discussion when we arrived amongst the reception staff in Spanish about rooms not being ready but my rusty spanish couldnt keep up with them. In fact the reception staff did let the parador down for us, some were less than helpful and certainly less than friendly, no eye contact and very official. I don't expect to be gushed at but a smile works wonders. Others couldn't help us enough and told us how lucky they were to be working in this brand new building.
Apart from the view, our room was huge, far too dark but as to be expected, beautifully furnished with everything you could hope for. The bathroom was good.
We ate for all 3 nights in the parador, primarily due to it being at the top of the town and us not wanting to get in the car after a day of sightseeing in 40 degrees of heat! The menu was varied, available in English and of good value if you chose the Menu Parador option. Beware, the portions are huge. Both me and my husband have large appetites but even we were astonished. I ordered Gazpacho one night and I swear I must have had at least a pint, accompanied by several huge scallops! Service was friendly and impeccable - reception staff take note!
Breakfast was the usual buffet at Paradores, with a huge selection of breads, cakes, cold cuts etc. A disappointment for me was the lack of cereal and for my husband the lack of opportunity to order hot food. Service again was impeccable!
This Parador boasts a spa area. We did use the swimming pool once but it was v unclear as guests which parts you could use free of charge. It is no use having signs in English and then all instructions in Spanish with spa staff who speak no English! ( a minor gripe and more about my frustration at not understanding!)
This is a delightful Parador, which we would use again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for one in the main building rather than at the side for a better view

We stayed to this new Parador in july. It's new, potentially glamorous, beautifully decorated and kept. The building is impressive, actually its foundation is an old castle on the little hill facing the city of Lorca (uninpressive). Staying at the parador is nice, good service, good rooms. Rooms lack of a big window, they have a side floor to ceiling window which is too small to enjoy the imposing surrounding view. Beds and bathrooms are nice and comfortable. In the room plastic flowers(?? avoidable). Bar and common areas very nice and modern. Covered (?) pool impossible to like because it's very hot and even with the outside door open you have the feeling of being secluded. Consideing the area average temperature it's quite odd to swim in a covered pool without having the possibility of sunbathing. I have asked for an adapter (I have an american plug) but they couldn't provide it to me, maybe because the place is brand new. Breakfast is good, they do not change cutlery and dishes, it's something they should address considering that they aim to be 5 stars. All in all a good experience, luxury parador.

Room Tip: Choose a middle room, side rooms have a wall partial view.
