Owner description: This key Civil War battlefield marked the last push north by Confederates in 1864. Although it's seen as a confederate victory, this advance on Washington, D.C. was brought to a hault by the forces led by Major General Lew Wallace, U.S. Army.

“The battle that saved Washington”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

There is so much Civil War history in the Washington/Pennsylvania corridor that folks can focus on Antietam and Gettysburg and forget that many skirmishes took place in the surrounding counties. The Monocacy site has been upgrades to include a very comprehensive visitors center where you can learn about the battle and then visit the surrounding farms where there are some nice walks.

“little known battlefield”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

Monocacy is one of the lesser known battlefields of the Civil War. The visitor center is newer having been built in 2007. There is no film but there is an electric map presentation at the visitor center to explain the battle. We also did the auto tour and visited the historic farms on the battlefield. We were not able to do some of the trails at the park because at the time of our visit they were still doing cleanup from hurricane Sandy. It is surprising that the battlefield is as intact as it is with its proximity to Frederick and Washington DC. Unfortunately it wasn't created until after I-270 was built which cuts through the middle of the battlefield.

“Loved it.”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

I had never heard of this battlefield but I really enjoyed it. Great time to be here, lots of fall color at the different stops. Ended up hiking around the river and seeing lots of deer.

“Awesome”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

Make sure you stop at the Visitors Center and head up to the 2nd floor. The fiber optic display of the events that happened at this site is awesome. The view is very nice as well. Very helpful and friendly staff.
