Description: Chef Bryan Voltaggio's modern American diner offers affordable all-day meals in a former Frederick car dealership transformed by clever design and raw, natural materials into an open, airy space, with a long counter fronting an open kitchen; its menu elevates the comfort-food canon, while adult beverages include boozy milkshakes as well as wine, beer and cocktails. Signature dishes include Fried Chicken with Buttermilk Biscuits, Meatloaf with Mushroom Gravy and Duck Fat Fried Potatoes.

The restaurant has a great pedigree but I was underwelmed by my meal. I had the highly rated fried chicken but was not impressed. Don't know what all the fuss was about. There isn't much ambiance. You are in a crowed room, packed in fairly close on hard chairs.

It's nice that you can see into the kitchen and the service was attentive. There is good lighting and an airy atmosphere.

My husband and I recently visited Family Meal for Sunday breakfast. Decor is great and service was really good. Food was okay - nothing out of the ordinary.

Expectations are very high because Chef Bryan Voltaggio is such a stud in the kitchen, and they were met - for the most part. The room is bright, airy and usually crowded but making a reservation is the right way to go. On a Saturday at noon two of us assembled a tasting & sharing lunch of several appetizers and the fried chicken. The chicken pot pie fritters and deviled eggs were both superb and a nicely sized for sharing. The duck fat fries came out a bit soggy although we've heard from others that they are usually very crispy. The normal portion of fried chicken was actually half a chicken and more than enough for sharing. It was perfectly cooked but don't expect a battered and deep-fried traditional southern fried chicken. Instead it comes out conveniently broken down with a thin coating of spiced rub somewhat reminiscent of "shake 'n bake" but much better. We did not have room for dessert but they looked very nice at neighboring tables. The service was attentive but the server did not know much about the ingredients. The bill for two, with one beer was $46 including tip - and we thought a reasonable value.

Mid Saturday afternoon with a very busy restaurant going almost at full tilt between the end of the lunch rush and the dinner service. After a modest wait,no reservations, we were seated at a very nice window table.
Pot Pie Fritters;Caesar Salad, House Pastrami Sand and onion rings.
The salad was endorsed by my partner and my pastrami was far superior to many of the offerings available at your local deli.
Excellent and topped off by a Truth IPA from Frederick County.
Very good, will return, but, will definitely make reservations.

The menu has very interesting seasonal twists on traditional dishes. I usually order their fish but recently tried the pork entrée and loved every bite.
