What a great museum that details just the medical accounts of the war. It is inexpensive to get into and gives a very thorough account of the war. Glad we went!

When we first moved to Frederick we visited the museum and since then have brought dozens of visitors, because it is so special. My wife is a nurse and has been fascinated by the type of care provided during the War in relation to her nursing experience. For me, the museum provides a great perspective on the role played by Frederick during the War. We never fail to learn something new on each visit. This is a "must see" for any Frederick visitor ... or resident, for that matter!

We had passed the National Museum of Civil War Medicine a few times before, and never stopped in. But over Thanksgiving weekend, we stopped in, and were happily rewarded with more than an hour of interesting exhibits. If there's one fact that stayed with me, it was this: That 95% of surgery in the Civil War was conducted with some form of anesthesia. If that shocks you--we had images of butcher surgeons operating on soldiers biting bullets to dull the pain--then perhaps you will like this museum. Prices are reasonable--$7.50 for adults, $7 for seniors, and a 10% AAA discount. Take the elevator to the second floor and begin your tour, learning everything from the types of medical schools available in the US before the Civil War, all the way through to embalming. You'll be surprisingly interested, and glad you made the trip.

We took the kids and very much enjoyed this museum. It is a self guided tour so you can go as fast or as slow as you would like. It was pretty affordable also.

I am a doctor, I have read a lot about Civil War Medicine, but to see a museum dedicated to that subject was amazing. Absolutely everything was historically accurate and presented in an interesting manner. This is the best museum on the subject I have ever seen. This museum is able to tell the true story, but the way it is presented is even interesting to children who may be interested in history. I learned that embalming got it's start in the Civil War! Frederick is one more quaint, beautiful historic town, but this museum is an added bonus!

The exhibit showing war wounds and the surgical results (mostly amputations) wasn't so much morbid as a testament to the skill of Civil War surgeons.
