Paradors were a great place to stay in their heyday some 20 to 30 years ago. Unfortunately little seems to have been done to these lovely old buildings to bring them and their staff up to the demands of the modern traveller.

Yes they are comfortable, yes they have WiFi etc but somehow for me they feel dowdy, like no one cares and the staff are doing their job to get paid with little interest in the client or the organization they work for.

In this Hotel we used the bar, where right at the entrance there are many "safety devices" scattered all over the wall at the entrance. A five star modern hotel would encase them in a housing and give the place some style, not here - Paco has just knocked fixings into the wall and dangled them there. Not important really but indicative of the lack of interest shown by staff and management.

We ate in the wonderful Honda Hotel restaurant next door, great food and wonderful service.

There is a real wow factor when you walk into the parador of Zafra. The main courtyard is gorgeous and you really feel that you are staying in a castle. Yes, you pay more for a parador, but in this case, I think it is worth it. The room was comfortable and spacious and had a lovely view. The courtyard, bar/cafeteria, and other common areas are all beautiful.

The 'but' here is security. I have stayed here several times, and have never liked the need to to park outside where (at least in winter) a variety of unsavoury people gather to drink, keep warm with a bonfire, and who knows what else! David G's experience (see his review of 25 April 2012) confirms my concern, although I have never heard of anything as bad as he experienced in a parador (or indeed in a hotel in Spain). That having been said, this is a lovely parador, in a delightful and interesting town. The parador is a mix of a mediaeval castle and a Renaissance palace, within easy walking distance of the 'twin' squares of Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica -- both exquisite. Last time, I didn't stay here, but we had drinks in the stunning patio. I just hope that the management can solve the security issue that marred David G's stay, and even put pressure on the local authority to make the parking area more secure

We were made very welcome after an early start from England and a long drive from Madrid. We were given a very pleasant and quiet room overlooking a small courtyard. Parking was easy right in front of the hotel.
The castle was full of history and even lists Hernan Cortes as one of its previous guests!
After the long drive we decided to eat in the parador but found the food expensive and mediochre. It was a Sunday and some of it looked as if it had been cooked the day before. Many years ago the food in paradors was very reliable but now it varies a lot and after this we ate out in local restaurants. Only three tables were taken so maybe other guests are finding the same.

This was my first Parador experience and it was lovely staying in a Castle/Palace.
Located in the old town of Zafra we had a large room overlooking some bars. The room had a/c good TV but poor wi-fi. Although the wi-fi worked in other parts of the hotel ok.
The buffet breakfast was great - served in the courtyard. We also tried the restaurant which was great - it even had a vegetarian menu.
A free tour of the castle was fun and well worth doing.
This is a really great hotel for a 2 day stay.
Street parking was nearby. Zafra is a lovely town but has way too many noisy kids!
