A short drive from town takes you to the geological feature called Rainbow Basin, home of the "Barstow Incline". There are places to park and get out along the way, though the road seems pretty narrow in places. Not for long/large vehicles. There is a campground nearby if you want to stay the night and explore the slot canyons. Would also avoid after a recent rain, I drove through a few puddles that could have been a problem if I'd gone a day earlier. Fantastic photo opportunities and great for rockhounds. There are fossils around, but mostly in areas where people probably shouldn't go; best to leave them where they are regardless. If you do a little internet searching you can see where they are/were so you know where to look from the trail. The Mojave River Valley Museum in town has lots of samples to look at if you want more information.

Beautiful rock formations and great area to piknic or hike! You can drive through with normal car...not a good idea for a lowered car or corvette..but 4wd is not needed.

We began our visit to the Rainbow Basin Natural Area with a hike along Owl Canyon that unfortunately wasn't particularly interesting. But then we began driving along the lovely Rainbow Basin Scenic Drive, which led us to an overlook where we parked and hiked along a lovely wash. That's a much better bet than Owl Canyon. We enjoyed both driving and hiking on the Rainbow Basin Scenic Drive.

Though the roads are unpaved, our low to the ground Acura made it thru without any problems. We were the only ones out there & got out several times to walk. The different colors were awesome! Worth the trip & a must see!
