Mojave Preserve offers towering rocks that cut through the sky to rolling dunes like a rumpled blanket. It's a fun place that deserves a few days to explore. Unfortunately, nearby hotels are not much of an option, so it makes it difficult to truly dedicate more than a long day here. It is far more optimal for campers, as there is plenty of places to setup for the night.
Grab your camera, your tent, and your pet! Plenty of pet friendly trails, campgrounds, and photo spots to enjoy!
The Mojave National Preserve is a great example of unaltered public lands and pristine serenity.
The dark skies are phenomenal for stargazing and the sand dunes at Kelso are totally worth the drive.
Just moments from I-15 and Baker, and even off the 40 heading to the river it's an easy drive. Make sure to stop by the Kelso Depot Museum and enjoy the wonderful NPS interpretive site.
Located between Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Parks, this was a great day trip while visiting 29 Palms/Joshua Tree. My destination was the giant and expansive sand dunes near Kelso. It was well marked for the turn off and rustic restrooms at the trailhead. I was there for sunset and it was spectacular.
Okay, so I don't know for a fact it is better, but according to the info, there is a higher density of joshua trees here than in Joshua Tree NP and no DOUBT there is a much lower density of visitors. That combination alone makes this place better in my book. The pristine desert and gorgeous cacti and other plants are breathtaking, the ever changing views and variety of mountain formations keeps it interesting. We hiked Teutonia Peak and the amazing Kelso Dunes which can be seen from 20 miles away. The train station was closed but it was pretty cool to see even from the outside. Good info on the signs. We were there in March so it was pretty easy, I can't imagine being there in the summer. This is a special place to visit.
We packed a lunch and spent the day. Plenty of beauty as you drive around the paved roads. There's a Train Depot with a small museum. I have heard that it's an alternatie route between Vegas and Palm Springs.
Driving through Mojave Preserve is like getting to drive across an entire country. There are mountains, volcano remains, sand dunes, historical buildings and Joshua Trees for as far as the eye can see.
We stopped in at the Kelso Depot for our Junior Ranger booklets, to watch a video about the park and buy some post cards. There are public restrooms and water refill stations available at this stop.
Though there are 2 campgrounds within the Preserve, we chose to boondock for a night by the WWI memorial in the heart of the park. The roads are fairly well maintained but watch out for cattle guards that need to be crossed slowly with care.
Hiking Teutonic peak trail was a highlight of our visit. The views go for miles and you can clearly see Cima dome as well as the densely populated Joshua Tree forest. Take water and a snack - it’s an easy trail but with the sun shining it can be tiring.
