This place was great! We walked up to the dunes when it was pretty hot and it felt way hotter here... read more
We took a quick drive through part of the preserve during our trips from Las Vegas to LA. We ended up hiking the Teutonia peak trail. Dirt trail had some marking and took you through a forest of Joshua trees until you got to the base of the mountain. From there a hike through a stairway of rocks got you to the peak with a georgeous view below.
After following a long unpaved (but easily drivable) road, you'll find a couple of interesting spots. One is the Kelso Dunes. You CAN drive to the dunes parking lot and then take a strenuous hike up them. Alternately, you can get a fine view of them for photos or with binoculars, on the road to the dunes. Just keep an eye out for a view you like, and pull over for a look ... when we went there was almost nobody there. Another interesting spot there is the Kelso Depot train station which is still in operation. The Depot is in good shape and is kind of a surprise to see in this particular location. Check which days the depot is open so as to plan your trip to include it if you'd like. Probably best to not go in summer.
So much to see... beautiful cacti, sand and hiking opportunities. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and a vehicle that can handle some rough terrain to see the best stuff.
It is free! I think it is a good idea to go through this reserve en route from/to LA to LV or LA to Death Valley NP. The main road is well paved. There are some off road or unpaved roads. Check the road condition before you enter, especially if you are heading to lava tube. There are a lot of Joshua trees, more than Joshua tree national park itself. However, 3G/LTE coverage is not good within the preserve. Download google offline map before you enter the preserve to ease yourself navigating around.
Getting to the dunes is a long walk to a hill and a few hours hike. You need food and water and all necessities if going up to the hill.
Rings loop trail by hole in the wall info center is long and boring until you get to the canyon. You can go the opposite way from parking lot past info center and go down where descriptive sign is. First you go down the rings into canyon and back up. Please be careful that going down the rings is a different experience than going up. A couple of parts were hard either direction because of the spacing of the rings. But it was fun. There might be a different way into the canyon from the road whereby you don't have to do the boring meandering hike.
Barber peak trail is not accessible from hole in the wall campground unless camping. No parking for the hike. Must go from hole in the wall info center. At least we didn't find it.
Teutonia peak trail on Cima road is magnificent with all Joshua trees everywhere.
We drive right through the Mojave Preserve when we go from Palm Desert to Las Vegas. It is mezmorizing the beauty of the desert is apparent to all who travel this route. Just be sure to have a full tank of gas! The sky is blue, the air is clean and if you do get bored you can always pick up route 40!
