Came here after being in Barstow for a night; the geography is cool. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and plenty of water if you're going to drive through here as it is very isolated! A cool drive!
Beautiful preserve. Take water when visiting. Lot's of trails to explore. Restrooms available and clean. Had a great time visiting from MO
On our way from Las Vegas to Palm Springs we took the short cut via Cima, Kelso and Amboy. We were surprised how green it was considering that it supposed to be a desert. However we soon saw that there were flooding and learned later at the Kelso depot about a storm the night before. The landscape is great and impressive. The road condition was a little bad due to the flood but road workers were already busy clearing it. The most spectacular views were after Kelso going downhill to Amboy.
Add a star if you want total solitude in the summer. A nice half-day excursion but not enough stopping places, no wow picture taking opportunities, and way too hot in the summer for hiking or even walking around.
We enjoyed much more our visit to Death Valley NP on the same trip.
Good for a full day in the part. We went in May and it was 70's.
Recommendations: Stop and get a park map at the Kelso Depot (Visitor Center and Museum), stop at hole in the wall, climb Kelso Sand Dunes (these dunes sing if you get the right amount of sand falling down the slope), visit the lava tubes, and you get to see the largest concentration of joshua trees in the world.
Take some water. Restrooms are at hole in the wall, kelso depot, & sand dunes only.
We drive through this preserve after a night's stay in Nipton. There was so much to see. We talked to a few of the park rangers. We stopped at Hole-in-the-Wall and Tim gave us a lot of useful information. The wildlife out there was fun to see. We wish we had more time to explore.
