“Interesting building...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013 via mobile

This is quite a stunning building! Many folk have mentioned the car lift.. Don't worry about it ... Once in your car or motorcycle is in garage its secure as there's no way out without reception buzzing out.. V good.great staff .. Don't miss basement bar!!

POSITIVES

• A stunning building – huge, rambling, full of history. Public spaces well used with many comfortable places to sit. A good rehabilitation – modernizing while maintaining character. Great fun to wander around discovering all the spaces.
• Very close to (in and part of) the center of Plasencia.
• Breakfast is excellent – huge choice, good quality food, plenty of tea and coffee. Hot options that are tasty. Lots of fresh fruit prepared and ready to eat. There is an additional charge of 16.64 Euros per day.
• Parking on site in an underground car park. There is a charge of 12 Euros per day. The entrance is well away from the main hotel entrance – I found it on Google Earth and put the latitude and longitude into my GPS – there are signs directing you towards it.
• Reception staff capable, efficient with good English. Provided map with list of buildings to see and visit.
• Plenty of outdoor space with a (seasonal) swimming pool.
• Excellent service – polite and unobtrusive.
• The room was average sized, very quiet. Desk to work at with a light. 1 hard chair and 1 semi-soft chair. Plenty of storage space. A safe that is easy to operate. Bathroom large with a tub and shower.
• Wifi in room and it is fast. I didn’t try the large flat screen TV.

NEGATIVES

• With breakfast and parking the hotel works out to be £104 or $167 per night. I still think it is good value.

CONCLUSION

A great place to stay. A great location. Restful and uplifting. However, the Hotel Palacio Carvajal Giron is nearby in the old part of town, is in a restored building, has great looking public spaces and is considerably cheaper than the Parador – worth thinking about. One option that occurs to me is to stay at the Carvajal and use the savings to have an indulgent meal / drink at the Parador.

We have stayed several times at this hotel since it was restored a few years ago, and we enjoyed this time most. Whether or not the staff's intention to strike the following day was a factor, we found the food, service and general ambience to be outstanding. Rooms are quirky and comfortable, and the restoration of the building itself is striking and tasteful. Parking arrangements, whereby you drive into a lift to take your car and its contents up into the excavated rock, are interesting but very convenient. There is a small swimming pool in the grounds that was still open in mid-October. Even the town of Plasencia itself seemed more agreeable, if quieter, than we remembered;it lies amidst picturesque surroundings and has most pleasant plazas for refreshments. The only disappointment is that parador prices are no longer the bargain they used to be.

This was the 5th parador we stayed in during our 'ruta de plata' and the one that we liked the most. A really lovely building in a great town.
The parking is well signed but a strange arrangement where we had to drive in to a lift with very little room either side and be carried up a floor to the parking level in the side of the hill under the parador. Reception was very helpful and asked us to wait a while and they would give us a large room well away from the function areas as they were expecting a lot of noise later.....something to be expected when staying in any parador on a Friday or Saturday night. They had a congress, a baptism and a wedding to cater for while we were there but we heard nothing and the only inconvenience was a very crowded breakfast area one day.
The bulding is really impressive with a massive stone staircase leading up from the bar, an incredible vaulted cellar used as a night bar, and a large tiled refectory area used for the usual excellent parador breakfast.
We did not eat in the hotel as there are several really good restaurants in the town.
This is the place to go if you want a good base for touring and also a hotel in the middle of a medieval town.

The hotel is in a lovely building. The staff were generally helpful. There was only one thing on which I would comment negatively: some staff, supported by their management, were reluctant to serve drinks on the terrace. Why have staff to serve if try can decide when and where they deign to serve? Breakfast was very good.

Staying in this converted convent is like staying in a castle. Even the furniture is in keeping. Our room had character, was very clean and had everything we required. The quality of the refurbishment is excellent throughout.

We were particularly impressed with the quality of the food, which is eaten in a large refectory with some interesting tiling and a very high timber vaulted ceiling. The pulpit for religious readings during meals also still remains. Breakfast had a great choice. The evening menus includes traditional dishes and a tasting menu. We received a complimentary fino on arrival.

Service was very good in all areas.

The location in the Old Town is excellent.

We weren't tempted to the small pool area, which is in the only part of the parador that has a conference facility feel to it.

All in all, it was a pleasure to stay here.

You enter the car lift outside the city walls and are taken up to parking two floors above. Out with the bags, up to reception. And it's all up from there too. A delightful parador, small but clean pool, blue-tile clad restaurant with very good service. Rooms and bathroom excellent, though not all have a proper view - it's worth asking. The location is perfect, and the historic building an attraction in itself. I found the bar particularly interesting from an architectural point of view. Value depends on the deal you get - as with all paradors. I certainly had no complaints.

Room Tip: Ask at reception about the view from the room.
