“Great Location”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2010

My husband and I spent two nights at this hotel in late May 2010. Our room (# 1) was a large corner room with both a balcony on the riverside and a terrace on the other side. Although situated just beyond the front desk, it was quiet. The hotel’s main asset is its extremely good location on the river at the entrance to the bridge leading to the old town. Unfortunately, its interior is due for a thorough cleaning and freshening up. The owner was friendly, but more preoccupied with her large, handsome Great Dane (who bounded into the small lobby to greet all arrivals) than with her lodgers. Especially interesting in the old town is the site of the medieval Jewish women’s ritual baths that can be visited on a brief tour arranged through the Visitor Center.

After a long day in the car we stopped at this hotel by chance. We had a wonderful welcome by a very friendly spanish lady, who apparently were running the place. She gave us a super service with check out and breakfast anytime we wanted. The hotel is an old doctors villa - a doctor with an extravagant taste. The common rooms were big and beautiful. Our room were a little more basic - but big and with great views on the old bridge and the fortified town.

We stayed here for one night, and had high expectations based on pictures of this property and other reviews we had read. What a disapponitment! Out of 20+ places we stayed at during a one month trip through Spain and Portugal, this was the worst one. It does have a good location at the foot of the old bridge leading into the medieval village of Besalu, but that's about all it has going for it. While we were there in May, the hotel was undergoing significant refurbishment with scaffolding all around. You had to go through a back entrance which was hard to find (no signs), and the lobby was small and ugly. All of this might have been OK, if the rooms and service were up to par, but our room was 2-star at best---furnishings were very basic and it was the only hotel on our entire trip which did not have a hair dryer.

Breakfast (not included in room price) was supposed to be at 8:30, but by 9:00 no one had shown up, Luckily there was an independent bar right below, where we got something to eat. The innkeeper finally showed up around 9:15, but by then we and the only other couple staying there had already had breakfast. Had we wanted to check out before 9:00, we would have been out of luck. Overall, a very strange experience, and a poor value based on what we paid. Also, if you're staying in Besalu on a Tuesday night, be advised that all of the best restaurants are closed on that night.
