“Disappointed”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

This hotel has a fantastic location but nothing else; loads of potential but would need a lot of money spent on it. We have visited different parts of Spain on many occasions and found this hotel to be the poorest value. Faded room, very little storage, shower broken but have to admit fantastic view from bedroom. Breakfast looked most uninviting so did not use it. Very large dog prowling around may put some people off. Can't comment much on staff since hardly saw anyone. Besalu would benefit from a good hotel to compliment such a lovely place.

As mentioned in earlier reviews the rooms are a little faded, but they are large and those at the front of the building have balconies that look over the bridge that stretches into the old town (it is a shame that the town's authorities are concreting over the cobbles of the bridge though). The hotel is quiet and it offers a good night's sleep. My only complaint is that our breakfast was spoilt by a staff member having a cigarette at an open door where the smell of smoke blew into the breakfast room. Once finished he then spent a good minute or two coughing. I was mollified by the fact that all the food had already been laid.

Great location at the foot of the bridge into Besalu, nice staff, a bit worn (OK, perhaps a lot worn) but in a faded sort of interesting way, the largest bathroom I think I've ever had anywhere with a huge tub, and a good bed. So, my husband and I slept well. The hotel has an air of faded elegance, but the room itself (apart from the giant bathorrm) was about as spartan as they come. But, it was quiet and we slept well, so that's the most important. It just doesn't live up to what you might expect looking at the outside.

Spain is a great country for motorcyclists. Nice empty back roads and lots of curves winding through mountains and valleys past vineyards and olive groves. We arrived at Besalu, a well-preserved medieval town dating back to the 10th and 11th century. Upon arrival we took a most convoluted route all around, up and down narrow cobbled streets to discover we were cut off by Pont Fortificial (fortified bridge) over the River Fluvia. Finally disentangling ourselves from the maze of streets we found Els Jardins de la Martana Hotel, a charming mansion set in the out of town end of the grand old bridge. We paid more than our budget but we had a lovely bath, tiled floor and high ceilings. It had a lounge with a fireplace as well as a large library and garden. It was a nice place to unwind and a small treat.

Room Tip: All the rooms in this place would be good as it seemed very private like staying in a house.

After a long day driving and exploring we found our way to the beautiful town of Besalu and even tho we were meant to be driving further we liked it so much that we decided to stay the night. We didn't have any reservations but were greeted with open arms, the lady was very friendly and helpful along with her trusty great dane which had a beautiful nature. The location was superb, right at the entrance of the bridge which leads you straight into town. The rooms were very simple but i was happy with my overall experience here and would definitely return. It is close to the other bridge on the highway that overlooks the village and the 12th century bridge so when the sun rose i was out there like a shot to capture some fantastic shots.

My husband and I spent two nights at this hotel in late May 2010. Our room (# 1) was a large corner room with both a balcony on the riverside and a terrace on the other side. Although situated just beyond the front desk, it was quiet. The hotel’s main asset is its extremely good location on the river at the entrance to the bridge leading to the old town. Unfortunately, its interior is due for a thorough cleaning and freshening up. The owner was friendly, but more preoccupied with her large, handsome Great Dane (who bounded into the small lobby to greet all arrivals) than with her lodgers. Especially interesting in the old town is the site of the medieval Jewish women’s ritual baths that can be visited on a brief tour arranged through the Visitor Center.

After a long day in the car we stopped at this hotel by chance. We had a wonderful welcome by a very friendly spanish lady, who apparently were running the place. She gave us a super service with check out and breakfast anytime we wanted. The hotel is an old doctors villa - a doctor with an extravagant taste. The common rooms were big and beautiful. Our room were a little more basic - but big and with great views on the old bridge and the fortified town.
