“Nice Hotel in peaceful location”
Reviewed August 15, 2010

My fiancee and I have just returned from a week long stay at Mas Ses Vinyes. The superior room in the grounds was excellent, far better than the 3 star rating would suggest. Very modern with a small terrance, a/c and an excellent bathroom. We ate out but had breakfast every day at the hotel which was excellent. The hotel is well located to visit the beaches and seaside towns of Caella, Llafranch, Pals and Aiguablava. A car is needed. Only complaint would be the cost of taxis which are about 20 euros for a five minute ride so you really need to have a designated driver if you are dining out.

We spent there a whole weekend looking for relax and having a good rest, and we made it for sure.

Our room was in the main building, a typical catalan "masia", with terrace and a big restroom, but no TV for not disturbing the calm. We woke up by hearing the sound of the birds singing.

We only had breakfasts at the hotel because we prefered to have lunch or diner at the beautiful villages near, like Begur, Calella or Pals. Breakfast quality was good enough to support later activities like small trips or going to the beach. Nice place.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary in Mas Ses Vinyes, a former country farm converted in a charming hotel near Begur, Llafranc y Calella de Palafruguell, the most attractive area of the Costa Brava (no highrises, no discos, but mostly well-to-do Catalans in a family-friendly environment). It´s a 10 minute drive to the beaches, and as it is located on a hill, you feel thousand miles away from civilization. The hotel commands wonderful views of rolling hills ending into the Mediterranean. Although it is only rated 3 star, the facilities are very nice: a avant-garde outdoor pool, a gourmet restaurant, a spa and very spacious rooms. It needs to be said that most rooms are in modern buildings/wings, not in the ´old´ house, where the reception, the bar and restaurant and some rooms are located. But what it lacks in character, is made up by very modern and big rooms, with flat screen TVs, a walk-in shower and a bath tub, and a terrace with table and chairs. I have seen 4 and even 5 star rooms that do not match these. The rooms has its ´own´amenities, although there was no shampoo (only gel and body cream). So bring that yourself.
Some constructive feedback: too bad that one has to pay seperate for access to the spa (25 euros per person I think). The rooms are not that cheap, so it could be included in the rate. Treatments of course are additional. The little breakfast buffet looked good, but when we came at 9.30h, it was almost empty. The one waitress hastened to replenish but by the time the buffet was up to par, we were already leaving (20 minutes later).
Apart from these glitches, it was a relaxing break with friendly and homey ambiance. A great opportunity to savor the Costa Brava as it once was. One tip: we had a fantastic meal in Tragamar, a funky beach restaurant in Calella de Palafruguell. Fresh seafood, tapas, rice dishes with a contemporary touch. Reservations are necesary if you want to secure a table.

My wife and I opted to stay at this hotel near Begur. We were not disappointed. It really is a nice place. They have a beautiful reception. We stayed in one of their new rooms with an outdoor patio. Spacious.

The infinity pool was inviting on the hot afternoons overlooking a cool view of nearby towns.

Free wifi in the room was a great plus so I could use my Ipod touch to make skype calls to the US.

Included breakfast was great too. We did not enter the spa as we thought the 25 euro entry was a tad excessive. They should make it something like 3 to 5 euros at most.

Great place to relax and not far from Begur or other places at all.

This little hotel in the Costa Brava is ideal for R&R. It's perched on a hill over the town of Pallafrugell, a ten minute drive down the hill to the several local coves, some with quiet beaches and some with lively pedestrian and restaurant scenes. We started one perfect day with an early morning swim at Aiguablava beach, a tranquil clear-
watered cove with little boats bobbing just past the swimming area, and returned to the hotel in time for the included buffet breakfast where the breads and petit croissants were so good we knew we had to be fairly near France. Then a restful few hours in shaded lounge chairs watching butterflies flit among the carefully planted flower borders with not a sound to be heard but birds and buzzing bees, and some laps in the decent-sized swimming pool with the hillside view.

Our room was in the main building, which meant no air conditioning but plenty of charm and a two-person tub. The newer buildings have A/C and eco-roofs, and there is a spa whose services we did not try. The hotel staff were friendly and accommodating. The other guests were pleasant and everyone seemed in tune with the peace of the place, even though there were families as well as couples. We were sad to leave.

  • Liked — The lovely pool area and gardens w hillside view, great breakfast
  • Disliked — Lack of A/C in our room
