“The best hotel I've ever stayed at! simply amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2009

I travel a lot, and I can honestly say that I've never stayed at a hotel that made me sadder to leave than was the case when my husband and I stayed for four nights at the Aiguaclara Hotel in Begur. We are already planning to return and have told friends about this perfect gem of a hotel. I worked for many years in the hospitality industry (restaurants and hotels), so I can be rather demanding of hotel and culinary experiences. This hotel and its owners are simply perfect. They could run training courses for boutique hotel owners. The mansion that is the hotel is absolutely charming-I'd describe it as very upscale with a bohemian, artful flair. There are several different and airy public spaces that are so beautiful and relaxing that it makes it hard to leave the hotel for the day to explore the beautiful town and its beaches. All I wanted to do was sit in one of the lounges and read while sipping tea. The room that we stayed in was wonderful-the Begur Suite--spacious and beautifully decorated. We had a fantastic meal at the restaurant, where we were introduced to a terrific local fish, called Dorado and had the most heavenly dessert and pumpkin soup. The breakfasts were to die for--lots of fresh fruit and fruit salads, wonderful breads and sweets and jams, spanish tortillas, meats and great spanish cheese, yogurt, cereal, fresh juice. As others have noted, in addition to all of this, the owners Joan and Clara are amazing people. I have never encountered such wonderful owners (they run the restaurant, too)--they are warm, charming, hospitable beyond compare, knowledgeable and incredibly nice people. Indeed, I should mention as an example of their kindness and hospitality, the following story. My husband arrived at the hotel ill from some bad fish that he ate in Barcelona. He was under the weather the entire time we were with Clara and Joan, which was a shame. What was so amazing to me was that they took such excellent care of my husband-indeed, I'd say they absolutely mothered him (they brought him tea on many occasions, insisted that he eat plain bread and delivered it several times, inquired about him often and ultimately arranged for him to see a doctor (who gave him excellent care). Clara even made him something simple that he could eat for dinner, just so he could enjoy a meal. (He's fine now.) That kind of special and caring treatment is something I've never encountered before when traveling, and is something that I will never forget.

We ended up booking last minute and as a result, the only room that was available was the smallest room. It was ground level and faced the street, so it was a bit noisy. The room was average. The bed was quite uncomfortable though - every time my husband made the tiniest movement, I would feel the bed reverberate! Clara and Joan are very friendly and extremely helpful with tips and suggestions. We arrived very late the first night (2am) and Joan waited up for us. Begur is a small but lovely, charming town with lots of great beaches nearby.

Begur is a quaint town and perfect if you want a break away from the city.
Chanced upon the hotel while surfing and pictures depicted it to be an ideal place to rest and relax. Wasn't surprised when I checked in (to the junior suite - Aiguaclara). In fact, I was blown away and the photographs on sites didn't do justice to it at all. It was by far the best hotel I've stayed in. It was like a home away from home; you could get comfortable almost immediately. The owners, Clara and Joan, paid attention to every little detail and there wasn't any bit I could fault them for. It was difficult not to feel their passion. Was reluctant to leave the town and would definitely hope to return and stay there again.

We stayed here because of the reviews on this site but found the hotel even more special than anticipated. What a perfect place. It is not luxury, just so very lovely and comfortable. The rooms are beautiful, big windows opening to the sites of the ancient town. You are staying in an old home and it feels it but has all the comforts. The owners are delightful. The breakfast is perfect and the food in the evening is very good; the setting in the evening for drinks and dinner is animated and romantic both. There is an extra little living room/terrace down below that is peaceful and great. Highly recommended, as is the area. Bonus: free wireless internet throughout. Be aware: there is no elevator; if you have large suitcases or trouble climbing request a first floor room.

The exceptional charm of this quiet boutique hotel begins with its wife-and-husband owners, Clara and Juan, two very warm people who greet you with a kiss on each cheek and then proudly show you around their 19th century mansion turned hotel with whimsically and elegantly decorated rooms featuring 15-foot-high ceilings, tall windows, crystal chandeliers, carved wooden shutters, and balcony (if requested). Expansive and delicious breakfast including freshly squeezed orange juice and homemade tortes, preserves and marmalades amongst many offerings. Very good advice about local sights and beaches. While not listed as a luxury hotel, the Aiguaclara spoils its guests in ways that luxury hotels do not.

We enjoyed a great few days at Aiguaclara. You are given a welcome that is genuine and Clara and Joan make you feel that you matter to tham as an individual, not just another guest. We had an excellent, airy room with views up to the castle. Bed was comfortable, shower excellent, decor simple but interesting and elegant. We enjoyed excellent breakfasts, Joan even came in especially early to give us breakfast on our final day. We also had an excellent evening meal. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for a relaxing few days in a pleasant small town, close to a selection of varied beaches,
(i liked sa tuna best), with a very interesting hinterland.

We spent a lovely week in this renovated old mansion just off the main square in Begur.
The owners are very welcoming, and it's a bit like staying with friends, but without the washing up!
The rooms are very airy with high ceilings, there are two outside terraces, and a lovely conservatory style restaurant where the owner does the cooking and his wife looks after the diners.
A very enjoyable stay.
