I travel a lot, and I can honestly say that I've never stayed at a hotel that made me sadder to leave than was the case when my husband and I stayed for four nights at the Aiguaclara Hotel in Begur. We are already planning to return and have told friends about this perfect gem of a hotel. I worked for many years in the hospitality industry (restaurants and hotels), so I can be rather demanding of hotel and culinary experiences. This hotel and its owners are simply perfect. They could run training courses for boutique hotel owners. The mansion that is the hotel is absolutely charming-I'd describe it as very upscale with a bohemian, artful flair. There are several different and airy public spaces that are so beautiful and relaxing that it makes it hard to leave the hotel for the day to explore the beautiful town and its beaches. All I wanted to do was sit in one of the lounges and read while sipping tea. The room that we stayed in was wonderful-the Begur Suite--spacious and beautifully decorated. We had a fantastic meal at the restaurant, where we were introduced to a terrific local fish, called Dorado and had the most heavenly dessert and pumpkin soup. The breakfasts were to die for--lots of fresh fruit and fruit salads, wonderful breads and sweets and jams, spanish tortillas, meats and great spanish cheese, yogurt, cereal, fresh juice. As others have noted, in addition to all of this, the owners Joan and Clara are amazing people. I have never encountered such wonderful owners (they run the restaurant, too)--they are warm, charming, hospitable beyond compare, knowledgeable and incredibly nice people. Indeed, I should mention as an example of their kindness and hospitality, the following story. My husband arrived at the hotel ill from some bad fish that he ate in Barcelona. He was under the weather the entire time we were with Clara and Joan, which was a shame. What was so amazing to me was that they took such excellent care of my husband-indeed, I'd say they absolutely mothered him (they brought him tea on many occasions, insisted that he eat plain bread and delivered it several times, inquired about him often and ultimately arranged for him to see a doctor (who gave him excellent care). Clara even made him something simple that he could eat for dinner, just so he could enjoy a meal. (He's fine now.) That kind of special and caring treatment is something I've never encountered before when traveling, and is something that I will never forget.
