“Visiting long-lost relatives in a beautiful place”
Reviewed September 29, 2012 via mobile

Did you ever visit some distant relative in another part of the country? They were so happy to see you and did everything so you would enjoy yourself seeing the sights? Well, this hotel is a bit like that.

From the moment the owners greeted us, Clara giving us kisses on both cheeks, European-style, I knew it would be a different experience. The house is a beautiful Cuban-style colonial mansion,
Built in the 19th century by a Begur native who spent time in the new world and returned. Bedrooms are large and decorated in a warm, neutral style. They seem designed to induce relaxation.

But it is in the public spaces where the fun begins. Clara collects old objects: suitcases, trunks, typewriters , globes, clocks, books.. Paintings ... To name a few... And arranges them in assemblages that are a treat to the eyes. The large courtyard of the house is partly glassed-in, partly open. This is the combination restaurant and lounge. Breakfast and dinner in the restaurant are excellent. A couple of 'honor bars' are available should you want a drink or snack at another time. A wonderful varied soundtrack of classic jazz and other music plays quietly in the lounge, setting a nice mood.

The best thing of all is that Clara and Joan will do anything for you. A brief question to Joan morphs into some wonderful help to make sure all goes well.

Oh ... And the town? It's a gem! Beautiful little plazas and cafes, nice small restaurants. Nearby are beaches, Greek and roman ruins, medieval towns, Salvador dali's castle-house to name a few sights. All in all, a wonderful un-hotel like experience!

We spent 5 nights here and didn't want to leave. Joan and Clara were the most wonderful hosts. Every little detail was thought through and the interiors and atmosphere oozed love and warmth. I wish there were more hotels like this in the world. We felt so happy there. It really is a special place. We can't wait to go back one day.

We stayed as a couple here for 5 nights in August. The hotel has a very authentic feel, is beautifully decorated and has the most welcoming staff. You really relax here from the first second you enter. The restaurant is the best in town for affordable prices. There is a self service bar, equipment for the beach and good parking facilities. We stayed in room 10 which has a scenic view of the castle and the bay. Only minus is that you easily here other guests in other rooms as the house is old. But if you can live with that it is a very memorable stay.

We had an amazing week at Aiguaclara from the second we arrived until we left. The hotel is an incredible place to stay, in a perfect location to visit surrounding beaches and also to spend time in Begur. I can't speak highly enough of the hosts, Clara and Joan. They were so friendly and receptive, making the stay even more fun.

The restaurant is fantastic, great atmosphere and really good food at night and a lovely breakfast.

All in all a great hotel, cannot wait to come back.

Thanks so much

Our objective review is offered as follows:
Pros
Clara & Joan offer as warm a welcome as it is possible to give. It is true what others say, it is like you are being invited most warmly into their home. We wish Clara and Joan the continued success that only people who have worked so hard and have such open hearts deserve.
Kirsten - is an absolute star! what she doesn't know isn't worth knowing. She booked all our restaurants and activities and we feel that her care and attention to us was above and beyond all expectation.
Hotel - is comfortable, super central location and very well decorated with a committment to a theme.
Cons
Honesty bar - don't mind paying for alcholic drink or cokes etc and think it's a nice touch but resented paying €1.30 each to make ourselves a cuppa of an evening. Also no water in room, had to pay for little bottles each day too. We are more accustomed to nespresso/ tea facilities in premium priced hotels these days.
The outside spaces are seated patios suitable for taking a coffee but there is no pool or outside space to take in the rays. You either have to drive to the coast or the public pool. When we wanted to chill and stretch out with a book we were kinda restricted to doing so in the room.
Parking - again, would not have expected to pay extra for parking per day with premium rate rooms. That said Begur is hilly so decided to pay for parking at hotel so we wouldn't have to schleap up and down hills to free parking in the Spanish heat. Parking by hotel was full so ended up in overflow parking for half the holiday - you guessed it - schleaping up and down hill but still incurred the €70+ addition to the bill.
On balance we loved Clara, Joan & Kirsten and liked the hotel though found it a little pricey for the facilities once all the extras had been added.

Room Tip: Begur suite has no outside space except a Juliette balcony. Can see from other travellers pictures t...

Having only just stepped in from a week long holiday in Begur, staying at the Hotel Aiguaclara, we feel compelled to write our review to pay compliment to the hotel's owners - Juan & Clara. In Aiguaclara they really have created a special hotel and which we would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone looking to stay in Begur.
Juan & Clara are the perfect hosts - from the moment Clara greated us, we were treated as if long lost cousins with a big hug and the warmest of welcomes. They also know how to throw a party. Purely by chance we arrived to discover Juan & Clara hosted an annual party to celebrate Begur's South American ancestors. This was the first day of our holiday and we been up at 4.30am that day but we still managed to stay up until 2am fuelled on mojitos, excellent music and not 1 but 4 DJ's!!!
Aiguaclara is a pleasure to stay in with great attention to detail. It is not five star luxury nor is it trying to be. However, it certainly is a special hotel which will leave a lasting (positive) impression. At it's heart is Clara & Juan - which was all to clear in their absence. We ate in the restaurant a couple of nights during our stay and the food was good but the star attraction with the restaurant is the fantastic ambience and atmosphere. On our second night Juan & Clara were not there and the service was frosty at best - the waitresses made us feel as if they were doing us a favour by serving us. This was not the case on our first meal at restaurant when Juan & Clara were there. But this is a small complaint and the only issue we could find with this wonderful hotel.
We have family living in Barcelona and on future trips will certainly keep our fingers crossed Juan & Clara can accomodate us.

We stayed here for a week in September. The room was perfect, the hotel had the most wonderful atmosphere, there was a brilliant Cuban party on the Saturday night and the staff gave us all sorts of tips that made our stay that little bit better. Can't recommend it enough.
