“Magical, Beautiful, Dreamy!”
Reviewed June 27, 2012

We loved this place. I would not be surprised if they one day received a Michelin rating. The owners were warm and friendly, the breakfast was a dream, and we loved the atmosphere, including our room. Also, as a bonus, their two pups Jade and Dottie wandered around sweetly. We stayed while visiting a friend in the area, and had a wonderful time at this beautiful hotel in this gorgeous city. Some friends on the trip with us were so jealous of our digs that they booked a room, too!

We are a family of four (two kids age 9 and 10) who stayed at Hotel Aatu while doing a few days of cycling with Cycle Catalan before an Easter/Spring Break trip to Barcelona. The owners couldn't have been nicer, and they went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and friendly, suggesting places to eat and things to see. Our girls made best friends with the hotel dogs. The rooms were beautiful and comfortable and the pools and gardens at sunset were gorgeous. The little villages and beaches in the area are really fun to explore by bike.

We made the mistake of choosing this lovely place for holding our wedding party. Having discussed all the plans with the owners, a few weeks later they suddenly mentioned that "only guests staying at the hotel could use the pool" (not other party guests) and that it was not a place that was suitable for lots of children (not having mentioned this before) and that putting on a very simple buffet for €750 was not possible and "not our way of doing things". Clearly, this was to be the first event of this type held there and it became obvious that although they had agreed, they did not really want to do it. So four months before the event, with family and friends having booked flights from different countries, were were left high and dry and trying to find an alternative. I cannot explain this "change of heart", but it's left me utterly disappointed, as it is indeed a wonderful location. The owners did return my deposit very promptly but with the hotel's name now on all the invitations, there is much that cannot be undone and I now have to find alternative accommodation for about 40 people. It appears that the revenue from booking the entire hotel for 2 nights out of season was not a strong enough incentive for following through with the agreed plans. We had such a nice time there, but this inflexibility and lack of commitment has left such a bitter taste. Also, I didn't mention that there was no hot water in the bathroom when we were there. A small point compared with the fix I'm now in trying to reorganise.

First of all we want to thank this lady for her compliments: the Hotel is a lovely place, a wonderful location, they had a nice time with us. We have to say that we also liked this family, and the whole issue has also left us disappointed.
The problem was very simple: we couldn´t reach an agreement with the price for the wedding party meals. When the reservation for their wedding party was made in July 2011 we only agreed the price for the rooms (breakfast included) and left discussions about meals pending. In their review they give details about the prices so we think we can also do it and clarify the matter. It was not until last Christmas (more than 5 months after the booking) they resumed conversations and suggested that they could bring their own drinks (wine, cava, etc) for the meals, which we refused, giving them a good price per bottle for our wines. Then they offered 10 euros per person for each of the two dinners (the 750 euros they mention, 75 people x 10 euros / person) and 20 euros per person for the wedding lunch!, so 40 euros / person for 3 meals.
Had they looked in our web they would have seen that our half board is 26 euros / person (non including drinks). Sorry, as we told them, this is not our standard, we don´t know how to do things with these prices, and to have a reservation for the rooms doesn´t entitle them to impose us their conditions and use our premises for their celebrations at such a low price, almost free of charge.
About the complaint of the hot water, the only thing we can say is that it’s the first notice we have and that instead of criticizing weeks after they could have just ask for help at the right moment.
This is all just a misunderstanding and if there’s someone to blame we are not the only ones. We sincerely wish this family all the best and a fantastic wedding celebration.

Aatu has a motel-style configuration, not a rural hotel's. But it is a much more relaxed and pleasant place than the 'motel' tag suggests. It has very extensive grounds, a decent sized swimming pool plus a plunge-pool. And it is run by a two-man team who are helpful and friendly and out to make guests' stay as pleasant as possible. There is a slightly 'amateur' feel to their approach to hotel management which I rather liked. It is quiet, with easy access to Girona or to the coast.

Main plus point was the quality of dinners in the restaurant. We ate in the first night because we were tired after a long day's driving, and had a real gastronomic treat - lovely light Italian cuisine (delicate salads and well cooked al dente pastas) washed down with a tasty and very reasonably priced local red. We ate in the second night because we could see no reason whatsoever to venture further afield!

Two niggles. Buffet breakfasts are no better than adequate, are not served until 9 o'clock and there are no tea/coffee making facilities in bedrooms - all of which is a bit of a damper on the start of the day if you are an early riser. The hotel dog scrounges for titbits whether you are eating indoors or out (didn't bother us, but might irk some people) and leaves his excreta everywhere (not very pleasant).

Room Tip: Pay the supplement for ground floor rooms with terrace. Upstairs rooms are nothing like as good.

We enjoyed our stay here thoroughly, and truly appreciated the extra attention the innkeeper (and excellent cook) gave our family, helping us with directions and activity reservations for the nearby Segway tour and various other venues. Our room was clean and everything operated well, and the boys certainly enjoyed the swimming pool. Peratallada is just a short walk along a farm path and then across the road. Hotel Aatu was more flexible than other regional hotels about allowing our family of 4 to stay in a single room (two separate sleeping areas), which is why we booked here in the first place -- all others required a second full room ($$$). Finally, it was quite central to many of the region's towns and sites, so an excellent choice for exploring.

We were really disappointed by Hotel Aatu. Hotel Aatu is located very close to a country road with traffic at night. It resembles more a motel than a hotel. Rooms are not very hygenic (we found larger insects several times) and dark (hardly any natural light). The pool is spartanic. The location is very noisy. The quality of the food served at the hotel is average at best. Management is not very professional (on our departure, the manager was working at the reception still dressed in a bathrobe at 9 a.m.) and complicated. All in all: a rip-off! Should you decide to stay there after all: dont forget your earplugs - you will need them at night.

This is not a review; this is a full attack in order to damage our business and therefore has an explanation, a plain explanation.
These clients had booked with us for 6 nights in august. On the night of the second day they said to us they had to leave early next morning and go back to Liechtenstein, but that they were very happy with everything and would come back.
This sudden decision left us with no time to react in order to sell the room for the remaining 4 days; we have to say august is our most important season and the fact that they were leaving all of a sudden 4 nights before the end of the booking was a real harm for us.
With the legal regulation of the issue (Decree 53/1994, 8th of February, article 21) we were able to charge 40% of the 4 days they were not willing to fulfil. We always try to act in a fair and calm way and decided to give them a better treatment and charge only one extra day, so that both parts should loose with the unpleasant situation.
From the very first moment they didn´t accept any solution different than to pay what they wanted to pay, not one euro more of the two nights they had enjoyed, in a completely rigid approach and unwilling to accept they were getting a generous deal from us. When we showed them the legal regulation of the matter and understood they were wrong, went completely mad with words and behaviour we can´t describe here for respect. We understood this stupid thing could develop into a serious affair and when they heard we were calling the police they finally paid the bill.
This review comes from anger and resentment and for this reason can´t help anyone to know our place and our work. We fully reject these opinions that have nothing to do with our small hotel and just show of the people from where they come. Of course we are not perfect and completely accept criticism but this review only intends to make harm.
We’ve had a summer full with happy, kind, polite, generous, understanding, nice, good, lively, cheerful, warm, easy-going and uncomplicated people to whom we take advantage to greet and thank. BESOS
