Back in Sept-2012, I slammed the Merchant Row Restaurant for their food quality.
But my wife and I went back to the Merchant Row in July 2013 for a evening diner and we were seated outside.
The chicken dinner specials we had were absolutely delicious and the wait staff was courteous and attentive.
The Colonial Inn had redeemed it's self as a establishment to enjoy a scrumptious dinner once again!
Kudos to the management for upgrading the restaurant's chef position and menu! Grateful patrons from Bedford, MA. Thanks!

I recently had a birthday celebration in the Alcott Room, a private dining room here, and found the food offerings good and the staff wonderful to work with. Kim, the catering sales manager, was very helpful, and our server Linda did everything she could to accommodate our group. The Inn offered us a limited a la carte dinner with a choice of soup or salad, four entrees, and several desserts. Those who chose the filet of beef were particularly wowed. Rather than choices of dessert, it would have been nice to have a cake for all of us to share. (They have a no outside food policy.) The room, which can accommodate up to 20, was decorated nicely for the holidays. Fairly expensive--there was a room rental charge of $100 and a 4% administrative fee in addition to the cost per guest and gratuity.

We dined at The Merchant's Row, the formal dining room at the Colonial Inn in the center of historic Concord. The room was tastefully decorated, if a little trite with paintings and artifacts.
The menu was oriented to traditional fare, rather than daring choices, but everything was well prepared and presented.
Service by a seasoned server was exceptional. He was properly attentive and very willing to make recommendations and answer questions thoughtfully. Most of all he was hospitable, making everyone feel welcome.

There are two distinct restaurants now...we tried the Liberty which is the "Pub" at the front of the Inn. The restaurant still has the traditional colonial decor. When we arrived the the hostess station and the hostess were hard to locate. Girls/waitresses/bartenders were standing around gabbing but did not come over to greet us when we entered the restaurant. We noticed the menu has changed recently after years of us coming here for really good food. More upscale in feeling and they now have a new chef. We tried the clam chowder - it was disappointing from past experiences here...skimpy "bowl" and narrow shape so about 6 ounces not even a cup for $7.00 and it was watery and not creamy, few clams or anything of substance. The Black Bean Burger ($13) was odd tasting and the side of coleslaw, purple color with a strange flavor to it too. The Grilled Cheese daily special (Mrkt price daily) had Prosciutto that was chewy and no special cheese flavor. It came with a few home made chips that were yummy but so few in number.Overall we would not be back unless they make some improvements to the quality and the quantity of the food.

We were very excited to spend Thanksgiving at the historic Colonial Inn. When we arrived to check in for our reservation, there were guests waiting for tables overflowing into the same area people were trying to serve themselves from the buffet. It was crowded and unorganized to say the least. The tables were so plain, no candles, flowers.. nothing.. kind of lacking the festive spirit of an old inn and the holiday itself. Our waiter was ok, kind of a smartass, but none the less served us our drinks in a timely manner. The buffet was messy, the salads table was a kind of yucky, salad dressing everywhere, stuff looked picked over and runny. The main buffet was fair... again disorganized, food caked all over the utensils, food everywhere. . The squash was soupy, the turkey kind of dry, the paella waaay too salty. The mashed potatoes and lobster bisque were good. They really needed staff stationed as servers to keep the food stocked and the areas cleaned.. It made me feel like I was could have been turned off from eating at any moment,, The desserts were again, just ok. Seemed like things were made too much in advance.. stuff was either melting, or hard.. I should note that I really am not a "foodie" or a picky eater, but at 55 dollars a person, I expected a little more. I am sad to report this.. my expectations were much higher than the quality of the meal..
