Very good colonial flavor food, in a historic hotel in a historic town. The food is good, ample portions, well served and the decor is historic colonial. Very good for tourists and locals alike. An age old favourite.

This is more than a restaurant -- it's an experience. Take your mind back to the founding of the Republic as you savor the cornbread, popovers and atmospheric spaces. The whole Inn is the epitome of charm and has an Alice In Wonderland feel as you wander from room to room. There are a number of diverse dining rooms each with their own distinctive feel. Have had numerous dishes here but seem always to end up back at the lobster rolls (now done as sliders) and finish off an Indian pudding. The service is always friendly and solicitous and have never had a bad meal.

The Colonial Inn has gone through a lot of changes over the years, and yet the food, service and atmosphere were always remained top shelf in our opinion. It was always a great night out. But the last couple of visits, we've noticed a change in menu and quality that has really disappointed us. Apparently there is a new executive chef (and possibly new management?) and it just isn't the same place anymore. Yes, the historical atmosphere remains... and the service is still acceptable... but the menu and the food have gone from absolute top shelf to barely average diner or pub fare and certainly not worth the long drive and moderately high cost for us.

We sincerely hope for a return to the old ways and the "to-die-for" meals we used to love, but we're not going to hold our breath. The changes appear to have been deliberate and the restaurant will just have to discover for itself whether or not the new executive chef and new menu are good ideas or bad ideas. The proof will be in their continued success or lack thereof moving forward from here.

If you want great New England style food in an incredible historical setting, choose the Colonial Inn. We ate in the room where the patriots moved their munitions in order to hide them from the British soldiers. This place has numerous rooms, each with its own charm. A woman in full costume and character of Louisa May Alcott came up to chat with us, adding to the experience.

We booked it just before we arrived and were given a large suite with a full kitchen, bath with jets, large sitting area and great bed for an amazing rate. We wish we had stayed here longer!
