“Yes to Walden Pond”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2014

If you go in the heat of the summer, it will be very crowded. Go during the week or before/after summer. There is a trail all the way around. It is quiet, tranquil, and please, keep it that way. Thanks.

Great location to relax after sightseeing, enjoying a coffee and book. Lots of families with kids playing in the water, but was still a quiet place

“For fans of Thoreau”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2014

This had to be one of the highlights of my trip to MA. I was inspired to visit Walden Pond after reading Thoreau at University, and when we were in the area I reminded my friends. I do not think that we expected for them to enjoy the pond quite as much as they did.The pond was frozen, and coming from the south-east of the UK that was a huge novelty to me. We were able to walk on the frozen pond, someone else tried skating, and there were ice fishermen trying to land a catch. There's a lovely walk along the edge of the pond, or you can take the path through the woods to see the site of Thoreau's cabin. There's also a replica cabin and a statue of Thoreau near the car park. Whilst visiting the pond is free, car parking is not. I think we paid $5, which my friends thought was quite expensive, but after we had spent a couple of very pleasant hours at the pond decided was worth the money.
The car park has some public conveniences which were an experience as they are eco-friendly non-flushing ones. In freezing temperatures I discovered you get quite a draught! All part of the fun, and very appropriate to be nature-friendly. There's a little gift shop in the area too, selling books, post cards etc.

“A beautiful spot…spoiled by popularity”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014

I used to love going to Walden Pond and walking the entire path around the pond. It was once a great source of solitude and peacefulness and a wonderful opportunity to get in touch with Walden's world.

It's now just a few stops short of Disneyland. Apparently, it's in a number of guidebooks so the tourists flock to the place in season. There's traffic and difficulty finding parking and, once you're there, it's difficult to find solitude anywhere on the premises. The paths are so crowded with people, you need passing lanes.

I'm sure it's still interesting for those who have not yet experienced it but for those of us who used to enjoy Walden Pond (year round), it's now just a disappointment.
