Parador de Puebla de Sanabria
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 9, 2013

We stayed at the hotel for one night on our Parador Route through the Kingdom of León. The hotel is a small, modern, building on the outskirts of town. Our room was clean and comfortable with a large bathroom and a splendid view of the town. Personally, the hotel was a little too far out of town for a stroll, but Reception gave us directions to drive to the Plaza Mayor which is at the top of the hill and ideally situated for visiting the castle and the beautiful ancient streets. Following the departure of a conference party the day we arrived, the hotel was virtually empty and we were the only customers in the Restaurant that night. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the food was excellent, although expensive compared to some of the restaurants in town. Breakfast however, was poor by Parador standards and quite disappointing. The bar doubles up as a cafeteria so relaxing with a drink before dinner would be best taken in the lounge the other side from Reception. The hotel would be popular with hikers visiting the nearby National Park and Lake, but being interested in history, we would probably stay in one of the period htels/hostals in town next time.

A very smart modern parador with excellent views of the village, a walk up to the old part and the castle is well worth the effort.
Our bedroom was rather small but comfortable, the bathroom spacious and well appointed.
The pool was very nice but the temperature suggested if was fed from a mountain spring.
Dinner in the dining room was nice if not outstanding, breakfast was very good.
Lago de Sanabria is stunning and only a short drive away.
The only serious downside was the piped music, which was an ever present annoyance.

We only stayed one night at this hotel but loved it. We had a lovely room which was quiet and extremely comfortable with a large bathroom.
Very pleasant staff and a very nice light and airy restaurant. There is also a small cafeteria which offers lighter snacks.
Nice outside terrace to sit with a drink and a large car park. There is also a lock up garage but this is very small - only takes about 6 vehicles.
Pueble de Sanabria is a truly delightful small town and we would certainly love to return.

We stayed only one day in this lovely Parador, but we would love to go again for a longer stay. The rooms are nice and it has a beautiful terrace. Totally recommended.

Located in the out skirts os this small village, this Parador lacks caracther - it's a new building, with no history or any special interest; however it's confortable, with good rooms, nice social areas and friendly staff .
So if you are just looking for a standard 4 star moderrn hotel it's ok, if you are expecting a historic building to match this old Puebla you are going to be dissapointed...

This hotel is fine for a modern motorway hotel, but it really shouldn't be classed as a Parador. We had a superior room so badly designed the bedroom was tiny and there was a lounge with no view right away down the hall, quite pointless.
The staff are not well informed and invented information when they didn't know it.

My biggest gripe is with the design, could have had stunning views up to the castle but was built back to front so you looked out onto walls. Incredible.

Small, comfortable, recently modernised Parador on the outskirts of the pretty and touristic village of Puebla de Sanabria, on the road out towards the Lago de Sanabria. Our room was fine, although lacking any character and therefore un-Parador-like. We had a double bed which was unusually small - and with only one towel initially in the room I suspect this was normally for 1 person (the hotel was full when we were there). Staff all very friendly and professional. Small swimming pool (nothing like as good as that in Tui parador). Horrible supermarket-style canned music demonstrated a sad lack of taste: how about some decent Spanish classical music playing quietly in the background to add a bit of class? We have noticed this in other Paradors (I remember being unable to escape the soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings in Cardona, and then there was Michael Jackson for breakfast in Bielsa: oh dear me). The Spanish have a perfect word for this: hortera.
Easy 15 minute walk across the river and left up the road to the village shops and bars/restaurants, then up some more to the church and castle. From there you can return down 233 steep steps back to the river. Driving out to the Lago de Sanabria on a sunny August afternoon you will find it overcrowded with beach people incongruously bathing in a majestic mountain setting: a congested scene which is best avoided if you want peace, quiet and a place to park. The walking around the lake is justly famous, although several of the walks are unrelentingly hard (even those classed rather amusingly as "medium"): take plenty of water and food and be prepared to climb hundreds of metres.
