Having dined at this establishment at least 30 times in the last 3 years I feel confident in giving an honest and accurate review of the "Calle Mayor". Situated half-way up the picturesque cobbled street that leads from one of Spain's most beautiful Plaza Mayors, the Calle Mayor is now into its 25th year and is still going strong.
A family-run business, Santiago and Manolo Canfran have created a little jewel of a restaurant that has managed to bring traditional hearty castlian fare into the modern world. Dishes are based on the local fare (lamb, pork, trout and kid) but have been given a contemporary touch that makes the dishes pleasing on both the eye and the palate. The roast suckling pig is a winner for me, as is the chocolate truffle with orange sauce. Delicious.
Service is friendly without being obsequious and intrusive, and the staff really do go overboard to meet any special requirements (Gluten-free, vegetarian) or changes you might have. In all the time I have dined there, I have yet to send anything back to the kitchen - which for me is rare. And if you want something off-menu, they will knock that up too.
The only suggestions I would make are that perhaps the menu could be varied a little more - it has not changed for many years. But, then, why mend something if it ain't broke? Also - freshly-made bread rolls (wholemeal, fig, tomato, olive) could work better instead of the chunks of sliced baguette.
All in all, with its lovely warm colours and decoration, this place really has "Castilian Chic". And no, I do not have shares in the place...not yet!
