“Lots of Options”

This is an affordable alternative to the more formal Metate Room and there is something for most anyone. Cafeteria style with nice salad choices, pizzas by the slice, burgers, and various entrees for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not inventive, not gourmet, but you won't go hungry! Friendly servers & a solid choice.

“Better overall than the Metate Room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2010

Ok, sorry, but this review is for May 2009, but I failed to submit it at the time it was written.

We had two lunches and one dinner in the Mesa Verde park. Lunch at the Far View Terrace Cafe, as far in the park as you can drive, was good, whereas the Metate room was not good and overpriced, which confirms the impact of good staff, as both places are run by the same company.

Lunch at the Far View terrace was a basket meal on the outside terrace under the parasols, a lovely dining ambience, and more than enough for a days scrambling around the ruins. We had half a chicken each with fries and salad, a small bottle of good white wine, then unlimited coffee, and all for around $10 each.

Good quality food, in a fine location.

“Reasnable place for breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2010

We ate breakfast at Far View Terrace when staying at Far View Lodge - it was OK. The hot food was tasty but it took 5 minutes for orange juice to be located when we were at the cash till - meaning that our hot food was fairly cold by the time we sat at a table to eat.

“A variety of food, but priced for tourists”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2009

I liked the restaurant, the food was good and the employees were very nice. Most tables have a view of the valley and thats worth something; especially with the good AC, its a good place to sit and rest. The food items were a bit overpriced, but its like that in most parks, wouldn't want to pay it everyday, but OK while you are there. Its too far to drive into town, so plan to eat at the restaurant or bring picnic supplies with you to the park. There is another restaurant in the hotel complex, they serve wild game items, but cost considerable more. All in all the park and the Far View Terrace Restaurant are pretty good.

“Terrible and Unwholesome Food”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2007

The following is excerpted from my report on Far View Lodge, so folks researching food options at Mesa Verde can be forewarned about the Far View Terrace cafeteria.

The food at the Far View Terrace cafeteria is awful, and I believe it's unwholesome. Under no circumstances should anyone eat there. Our first impression at dinnertime was that we should turn and run, but we stayed. That turned out to be a serious mistake which we compounded by coming back for breakfast the next day. But there are no reasonable choices if you don't bring your own provisions and want to avoid the 40-mile round-trip to Cortez for each meal (and, just for the record, the only place in the Park you can buy a candy bar is at the Morefield Campground, 22 miles round-trip from Far View). Far View Terrace is a steam-table cafeteria and the food was absolutely horrible. The vegetables were ice-cold; not warm or cool, ice-cold! The roast beef? was dried like jerky, and cold. The bread pudding? actually tasted like chemical solvent or paint remover, it was downright frightening! The chicken backs were slimy greasy. The bread was stale. Breakfast's scrambled eggs were cold and had a flavor we couldn't decipher. The bacon was very much uncooked. The oatmeal was gelatinous. And the corned beef hash showed no signs of having been heated, never mind cooked.

The reason this all became such a serious mistake was that I was subsequently stricken by food poisoning, and since this was the only place I'd eaten in the 36 hours before symptom onset there's no question in my mind where I was poisoned.

Never again…
