My eldest 4 and husband went on this one. My four year old was in a mood so we chilled on a bench and had some water. They repeatedly said that the Cliff Palace tour was better than this one but it was an easier climb. If you were unable to get into one of the tour, my husband said that would be a good alternative.

This dwelling was about as interesting as the ones that require a guided tour, but it lacked the climbing and ranger's narrative which made a lot to the experience. But if the tours are full, I guess this would make it worth driving all the way up there.

Spruce Tree House is the most accessible of the five Mesa Verde cliff dwellings open to tourists. There is no need to schedule a tour, and the winding trail in and out of the place is passable for anyone who can walk a mile without stopping. This is a mixed blessing, however, since this makes for the most crowded attraction at Mesa Verde. There is only one ranger, so the visitor doesn't get the full tour of the site that they would get at Long House, Cliff Palace, or the less-crowded Step House.

That is not to say that there isn't ample reason to visit Spruce Tree House. It does have a kiva that one can climb in and out of, complete with ladder, and there are carvings and paintings (petroglyphs and petrographs) unique to the site. If you're pressed for time or don't want to chance the stairs at the other cliff dwellings, you will absolutely get the Mesa Verde experience touring Spruce Tree House, but you will probably enjoy the other dwellings a bit more if they're an option for you.

This was a super little tour for our young kids to get to stretch their legs and learn something at the same time. The drive up to the cliff dwellings was phenomenal. The short walk from the parking lot to the dwelling was perfect for the short legs of our kids and they enjoyed climbing down the ladder into the kieve to see the sleeping accommodations of the former inhabitants.

The tour guide pointed out many hidden aspects that I am sure I would not have noticed. An original hand print or a butterfly painting, it amazed my young sons that these artifacts still remain. Put this on your bucket list.
