“Great Stay”
Reviewed August 3, 2010

I didn't look at the reviews before my trip and after staying at the Far View Lodge, i'm shocked by all the negative reviews. We stayed 3 nights in a Kiva room with my wife and 2 young kids. Our room had a fantastic view and although the beds were doubles and not queens, they were very comfortable. The room and bathroom were all clean - my only complaints were that there was only one small mirror in the room and the internet access in the lobby was down "due to the thunderstorms". We ate in the restaurant 2 times - I thought the food was pretty good and although it wasn't cheap, i it was no more expensive than similar quality restaurants.

Mesa Verde is a fantastic, magical place. The "lodge" consists of a series fo 1960's era motel units, each with about 6 rooms. The units are situated near the top of the mesa, affording great views. The rooms are small, but well designed to make the most of the limited space. We opted for the "Kiva" premium rooms, which had great beds and nice furnishings. Unfortunately the walls are paper thin and provided almost no privacy. There are no TV's, presumably adding to the ancient vibe of Mesa Verde. We were fine with that and looked forward to watching the lightning show from the balcony. However the lack of TV's came as a surprise to the family staying next to us, and after the kids whined long enough the parents relented and agreed to blare a DVD over the computer for all of the neighbours to hear.

Mesa Verde is a great place that offers a great atmosphere. We just wished the accommodations did not destroy our great impression of the park.

The restaurant and other services are quite good.

People visit Mesa Verde to immerse themselves in Ancient Puebloan culture. There is no better venue for the modern traveller (sans tent) to loose himself in the imaginings of times past, than the glorious mesa top at Far View. Each room has a breathtaking view, private balcony and evening serenade courtesy of the high plains wildlife (unless of course you choose to close your windows and turn on the air conditioning).

The Lodge is managed by Aramark, which travelers may recognize as an institutional food services and management company. We were dizzyingly thrilled when our expectations exceeded far beyond "airport food" and into the "let's stay here again, but for longer next time" category.

Rooms were decorated with local textiles, impeccably clean and thoroughly appointed. Even the coffee maker was stocked with premium brand coffee. The restaurant excelled in food quality and service, all with a local flare in offerings. Surprisingly, the exclusivity of the location did not translate into outrageous prices (even on the wine list).

The Rangers of Mesa Verde National Park treat the heritage of this Native Puebloan landscape with reverence and a deeply personal and respectful sense of stewardship. Far View Lodge offers travelers a magically unique opportunity to cohabit the environs and touch the past so closely. It was a most memorable experience and should not be missed.

Stayed for 2 nights in the Far view lodge. The room had (very) small beds, no airco, and a shower that was minimal functioning. The restaurant is to expensive for the quality and service. They know that the prices are to high and automatically add the service to the bill probably knowing that the customer would otherwise only tip a low percentage.
Don't expect the wireless to work in your room. In the reception it does work though.

The location is beautiful though and the second day we went for a dinner to the Far View Caf'é which is next door. The food at the Café was o.k. and very good quality for the price.

We spent two days in Mesa Verde and stayed at Far View Lodge. Being able to stay in the park was worth the extra money it cost to stay there. We probably wouldn't have stayed for the evening programs nor made it on time for the ranger led hike to Long House. The staff was friendly and helpful.

I had rather low expectations about the far view lodge.
However, I was still disappointed.
We had booked a Kiva room, which looked pretty at first sight. However, everything (furniture, floor, ceiling, bath room,...) looks old and worn off. Our room was in urgent need for an update. Price - quality was very low.
My major disappointment, just as I can read in the reviews below, is the lack of view. i really hoped for a "far view", but could only see bushes and other buildings... I had expected that the Kiva rooms would be the rooms with the nicer views but alas.
We could sleep very well (despite the fact that for example the sheets were not really fitting on the bed) and did not hear any noise. (our room was at the end of a one floor building). We did not miss a TV at all. There was an ice machine next to our building, very convenient. Also parking at the door of our room was an advantage.

We had dinner in the Metate room, this was not such a good experience. Our waitress was very rude. Given the prices and the fact that the restaurant really tries to be fancy, the food was not so good.

Would I recommend this hotel to somebody? YES! Just because of the location. It is a long (and beautiful!) drive up to Mesa Verde, and you don't want to make it more than needed.
Our ranger guided tour to Balcony house (in the middle of a thunderstorm) was GREAT! I We also visited Spuce Tree House and Step house, and some other dwellings and kiva's on our own.

The best thing about the Far View Lodge is the location. It is a treat to stay in the park rather than having to drive down the mesa to a nearby town for lodging. The lodge and Metate Room staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was a standard room which had relatively new furnishings with a southwest theme. The bathroom was basic and had a small shower. While the room did not have a TV or phone in the room, who cares when you have this amazing park surrounding you?? We took the ranger-guided Cliff Palace tour and highly recommend it. We also suggest seeing the many self-guided sites around the park. Dinner at the Metate Room was wonderful. Breakfast at the Far View Terrace was mediocre and a bit overpriced.
