“Relaxing summer getaway”

Spent 10 days in the villa and loved every minute of it. We would recommend a hire car from Malaga airport as the villa is only an hour or so away on an easy route but is located on a headland above the town so you need a car or a strong pair of legs to get back again when you venture in! The villa is in a small gated development that is relatively quiet, feels secure and has a parking space next to it. The communal pool wasn't busy even in the height of summer. It overlooks the town and beach and provides a perfect place to laze away the day with an occasional welcoming breeze. Sun loungers are available and the villa has parasols for when it gets hot. Watching the sun come up in the morning on the wrap-around balcony with a hot coffee and a book was bliss. If kids need to get out of the heat for a bit then the villa is well equipped with a DVD player and TV to keep them amused while they recover. The kitchen has enough crockery and utensils and a large fridge/freezer which was perfect for stocking up on essentials for the holiday. It keeps the wine and beer cold too! Bedrooms are big enough and the beds are comfy. I'm normally a very picky sleeper and don't look forward to staying anywhere different but slept like a log for the whole 10 days.

Almunecar is a nice Spanish town with a great old quarter full of small winding which lead down to the sea. It has big supermarkets (Lidl and Mercadona) and plenty of small tourist shops to browse in and bars and restaurants to eat out in. The food and wine is good quality and cheap if you choose from the menu of the day (Menu del dia). Try and get to La Jijonenca if you love ice cream as it is a small family run shop with a huge selection of flavours. A large market is in town centre once a week and you can easily spend an hour browsing. We didn't see many English tourists and managed to easily get by with very little Spanish; everyone was very friendly and helpful. The town has a water park close to the villa which is a fun way to spend a day, particularly if you like speed then try the big slide!. Almunecar is also a good place for those keen to explore as it is close to Nerja (stalagmite caves), Frigiliana (very pretty mountain village with arty shops) and Granada (Alhambra palace). Check out the time of year that you visit as there are lots of festivals going on which are always great spectacles.

Couldn't recommend this villa more. Have been there several times before and look forward to returning again in the future.

“Great base for variety of activities in the area”
Reviewed October 9, 2017 for a stay in August 2017

The house is in a great location, out of the bustle of the town but only a short walk to some wonderful restaurants. There are lots of water activities on your doorstep and only an hour from amazing Granada.

Thanks for your great review.
For once we've had the opportunity of behaving like holidaymakers too, as all the family are out. We've spend 3 glorious relaxing days at different beaches and feasted at the beach restaurants!

“Comfortable holiday home with fabulous view”
Reviewed May 1, 2017 for a stay in April 2017

We had a lovely time in Sheila's house, it is in a very small quiet complex with a surprisingly large pool with an amazing view, we spent several very happy afternoons there soaking up the sun. The pool is not heated but even I managed to get in for a swim! The house is very comfortable with fantastic views from all of the bedrooms and a large terrace.
The town of Almunecar has plenty to do and see and as we were there during Semana Santa-Holy week there were religious parades every night which were very special to witness. There are lots of lovely restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from. There is a very long promenade so plenty of walking with lovely views.
We traveled up to Otivar on Easter Sunday for lunch to El Capricho which has a huge terrace with lovely views and delicious food.
Would definitely recommend renting this property.

Wonderful that you all enjoyed your holiday! I too love to join with all the locals watching the Easter parades.
I'm glad that you enjoyed yourselves checking out the bars and restaurants - we enjoy having a beer in the chiringuitos on the beach, but then in the evenings it's always lovely to go into the old town, and if not have a full meal, do a 'tapas trail'!
It sounds as if the birthday meal went off well up in Otivar - views to die for!

“Beautiful house, amazing setting, sea view. Definitely recommend to others.”
Reviewed September 11, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

My husband and I have returned here as we had the best stay last time we came a year ago. The house is spacious, clean and had everything there we needed. We went to the pool each day and also the beach which is very close by at the bottom of the hill. The views from the house overlook the sea and are breath taking. We were lucky enough to even see dolphins one morning whilst eating breakfast! We will definitely be coming again. Thank you Sheila for all your helpful information and for a brilliant stay.

Thank you for your kind comments and well done for spotting the dolphins this time - I obviously need to be a bit more watchful when I'm taking breakfast on the terrace!
We look forward to your next booking with us.

“Great weekend break”
Reviewed August 16, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

A great getaway from the heat and hectic life of Madrid! Beautiful house with lovely pool and great little town. We hired a car and drove to some great nearby beaches that Sheila suggested to us. We also enjoyed some great tapas and flamenco in Almuñecar town. All in all a perfect weekend. Thanks Sheila!

De nada Shona!
We hope that you can take another break from your hectic life in Madrid to get down to either this seaside villa or maybe our retreat in the hills, Bajo La Maroma! This is just outside the white village of Canillas de Aceituno, only an hour from the airport and less than 30mins from the coast.

“Amazing sea-view apartment”
Reviewed August 16, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Spent a weekend in this amazing gated community. We booked a flight to Malaga and rented a car at the airport. Very good connection to Almune-by-car. Arrived at night so couldn't see the breathtaking views yet. Even better waking up the next morning. Nice beaches close by. If you rent a car be sure to check out the beaches in the area. Highly recommend this villa!

“Excellent villa with stunning sea-views”
Reviewed July 7, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We had an excellent break at La Rijana. Villa was perfect, had everything that we needed including a large wrap-around balcony over-looking the sea. Short drive from many secluded cove beaches along the Costa Tropical and close to the town centre. We particularly enjoyed wandering around the old town, which has plenty of traditional bodegas and restaurants to choose from. Overall an excellent holiday and hope to stay here again.

Thanks Kirsty, so glad that you enjoyed your break.
I agree entirely with you, the joys of this house and location are the 2-sided terrace (to catch or avoid the sun, depending on the weather and your preferance), the huge variety of beaches (with differing proximity, backdrops and facilities) and the town in its three categories, the historic cobbled atmospheric old town, the innumerable chiringuitos (beach bars) of the coast and the extra services and facilities provided by the newerparts of town.
We certainly hope to see you again with returners' discount!!
